So we've compiled all our paperwork, and I think we're just about ready to submit the application! However, I wanted to run this by you guys and see if you can spot anything we're missing. This is a total list of everything we will be sending in - if something is missing that we should send, please let me know!

For clarification, we are students and common-law partners, applying outland through Berlin, and currently living together. All things listed below are accompanied by translations certified either by official translators or by those responsible for the original documents.

General

  • Payment reciept, including payment of all fees
  • Cover letter
  • Index of all documentation

For the sponsor (me)

  • Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement and Undertaking IMM 1344
  • Sponsorship Evaluation IMM 5481
  • Sponsor Questionnaire IMM 5540
  • Letter explaining my plans to reestablish myself in Canada
  • Two letters of recommendation from my professors for application in my desired field of study in Canada
  • A copy of my application package for desired universities, showing my intent and ability to apply for studies in Canada
  • Letter of support from my parents, stating they will support me financially/logistically in my reestablishment in Canada
  • A photocopy of my Canadian passport
  • Notes explaining oddities, such as my not having phone numbers for most of the apartments I lived in in Germany, and my not having applied to universities in Canada yet

For the applicant (my girlfriend)

  • Generic Application Form for Canada IMM 0008
  • Sponsored Spouse/Partner Questionnaire IMM 5490
  • Background and Family Documentation (IMM 5669 + IMM 5406)
  • Medical Report IMM 1017
  • 8 recent photographs according to specifications (white background, head and shoulders, etc.), including one with name and date of birth
  • Police Certificate
  • Notes explaining oddities, such as that why police certificate notes her citizenship as "German, Ukranian" despite no longer being a Ukranian citizen, that her father has disappeared and how nothing is known about him, her mother's remarriage, etc.

Relationship Documentation/Proof

  • Documentation from the bank demonstrating that we opened a joint account in November 2011
  • Bank statement printout showing that our joint account is now used for all monthly expenses as well as most household expenses
  • Letter from a housing representative of our Studentenwohnheim noting that, despite not having our names on the same rental contract and living in separate "rooms", we do indeed live in the same apartment and have since April 2010
  • Copies and translations of all rental contracts/extensions proving cohabitation from April 2010 till September 2012
  • 32 photographs of us together, with members of my family and her family, at different times of the year, with different haircuts, and in our apartment
  • 3 supporting letters from family stating that they know of the relationship and our cohabitation, and vouching for its authenticity, two of which are notarized
  • Printouts of Facebook accounts showing our relationship status as well as the date we made that status public on Facebook
  • Travel documents for a trip to Canada we took together in 2010
  • Museum and travel tickets for a trip to Prague we took together in 2011
  • 3 envelopes and postcards addressed to both of us at the same address
  • E-mail records from January 2010 till October 2011
  • Signed and notarized Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union
  • Notes explaining how our relationship started and developed, and our plants for the future (including the names we've settled on for future children)
  • Notes explaining oddities, such as the rental contracts (student housing is dealt with on a room-by-room basis, and we each rent one of the two rooms of our common apartment), varying relationship start dates (when the relationship started, when I moved in with her, when we moved into a new apartment together), rare e-mail communication (we live together, so rarely need to communicate over distances), etc.

So, what do you guys think? Are we missing anything? If we are, please let me know! We want this done right, and done as quickly as possible.

We folllowed the checklists (especially the applicants checklist) step by step and made sure we had everything. Comparing your list to ours I noticed missing:

sponsor:
- option c printout, or explaining why you can't send one

applicant:
- birth certificate
- copy of passport

otherwise it looks pretty good to me :)

Thank you for the reply! Good to hear we've got almost everything.

I have not worked in Canada for the past five years - is it sufficient to note that I've not been employed in Canada as an explanation as to why I don't have an Option C printout? Or should I somehow get access to a printout relating to the one job I held for three months in the summer of 2007? How would I do that?

you have to call canada revenue agency to get a option c printout ( instructions are on the sponsor's checklist)
but if you only worked in 2007, I would just write a note that you haven't filed taxes in Canada for the last 5 years, because you live in Germany.

You need an option C printout for the most recent tax year (it's basically a summary of your notice of assessment) since you haven't worked or lived in Canada just make a separate note indicating this. it won't be a problem.. goodluck!!!

My common law partner is sponsoring me. He has not worked in Canada for 5 years either. He has been travelling and living away with me.

To get his Option C, we called 1800 959 8281. They are going to send him the relevant paper work. When he receives it, we are going to take it to H&R block... they will get his files up to date and then we will get the Option C. They said it will take about 6 weeks in total to sort this out. If I were you, I would go ahead and get this done. It could be problematic if you don't. Also, for my boyfriend, we are writing a 5 year history as an additional supplement to show how he was supporting himself financially etc.

I am not sure because we are in the early stages of this but from what i have read and heard, this is quite important.

You can only get an Option C printout, if you filed your taxes in Canada. Since the OP is not living in Canada he should be fine without it, as long as he submits a note explaining his situation.

When we called that number, they advised him to get up to date and file even though he has not been working. They said he will receive his Option C after he gets up to date.

I am not sure about how it will work out where he has not been working, but for us personally, we do not want to risk anything so he is going to file even though he has nothing to file.
