Hi
Do CIC really check with CBSA about travel records to verify your presence in Canada ?
If so then why issue RQ ? Couldn't they be able to automatically ( will be easy to have an application) calculate total days out of the country for any given period ?
am I missing something ?

Actually that's a very good question, because CIC has access to the travel records

They issue you RQ after checking CBSA records and your complete application because they find that you do not meet residency requirement (1095 days) or they have doubt about your credibility of your application.
They put the burden on applicant to prove his/her residency by sending RQ. If proof is strong enough, you are accepted and given test/interview/oath else if not then the application is sent the Citizenship Judge.

Correct. It's a Residence Questionnaire for the applicant to prove his/her residence, ie a way for you to explain their doubts. Sometimes they'll find doubts even if CBSA record agree with what you claim for residence in Canada. I think this happens when they find something suspicious in your application materials. So it's not always a good idea to send them something they don't ask for, as you may implicate yourself...

Keep in mind that CBSA report shows entries only no record of exits since they do not stamp passports when exiting, so there is no way for them to know when you left Canada and that's why they need to verify your passport on interview day because it should show the entry stamp to the country you visited when you left Canada.
