Discrepency in Names

Here in Saudi Arabia, often, the names of expatriates get changed. For instance, if the principal applicant is named John Doe, and his father's name is Tom Smith, his name would appear like
John Doe Tom Smith
on all the identity documents, police certificates, and bank accounts. How can this situation be resolved, when furnishing proof of funds, police certificates, etc. post ITA.

Can a letter of explanation be used?
