You sir deserve a salute
my 35*45 mm image was coming 413*531 so was worried about the 420*540 pixels. if i increased the pixels it would have been bigger than 35*45. I am leaving it like 35*45mm.

Thanks again for clarifying.

A standard image is considered to be 300 dpi. That's 300 pixels for every physical inch. Now IRCC specifies the dimensions in metric, so if we convert those dimensions to imperial, we get:
35 x 45 mm = 1.378 x 1.772 in

At 300 pixels per inch, that digital image must be 413 x 531 pixels. IRCC has conveniently rounded that up to 420 x 540 pixels.

For a 24-bit color image, that is exactly 24 / 8 = 3 bytes per pixel or 420 x 540 x 3 = 226,803 bytes = 221 kilobytes (kb). Again, IRCC is rounding this up to 240 kb.

There is little ambiguity here in IRCC's intended photo size. 600 dpi only applies if you are scanning a physical photo. If you print a 420 x 540 pixel image at 600 dpi, the image will be very small, physically, and certainly smaller than 35 x 45 mm. Try 300 dpi.

You are correct with your calculations, however how sure are we that CIC conveniently rounded it up , they say it should be "at least" 420*540 that means its is ok if we go higher.
so if you create a 35*45 mm at 600 dpi you get a physical dimension of 827 *1063 pixels which is way above the "at least" figure

I stumbled on this website http://visafoto.com/ca_visa

I posted the calculations to show the relationship between physical size and digital size. All dimensions and sizes that IRCC specifies, physical or digital, are the minimum. You can and should make your images larger than this. IRCC is rounding those dimensions and sizes up to ensure that the image file has the minimum amount of detail needed (i.e., at least 300 dpi, preferably higher).

Again, 600 dpi minimum only applies to scanned photos, that is, a printed photo that you are scanning or taking a photo of. This is to ensure that the detail in the reproduction is sufficient.

Important to note that 35 x 45 mm frame size is the minimum, 420 x 540 pixels is the minimum, 240 kb is the target size.

Can you give the physical dimensions of the photo? Depending on if it's larger or smaller, you may need to adjust the dpi up or down.

I had the same issue, my photographer took a standard Canadian Visa photo, and the physical "printed-out" dimensions were 35x45mm (i measured this myself), and I also asked him to give me the soft copy of the picture.

Now, the soft copy was as you guys are saying; 413x531 so I asked the photographer to send me a 420x540 version.

He did it, and the result was only that the dimensions of the picture are around 37x47mm or 38x48mm. The reason is CIC states that it should be "at least" 420x540 pixels, so thats the baseline we need to meet.

To me, it doesn't matter if the physical dimensions of the picture go over 35x45 by a little bit, the more important thing is to meet the 420x540 pixel requirement.

I scanned a passport photo with 600 dpi and high quality, but it is appearing as a small image in the middle of the scan. I resized it with a online tool and now the final dimensions are 749*788, 75kb and 600 dpi. Is that okay.

Also how do I make sure that face is as per the specs mentioned by them? It says 31mm - 33mm.. Is there way to know that face is as per correct specs without printing the photo?

Because the specifications mentioned next to the Digital Photo in your document checklist says that "the photo should be minimum 35mm x 45mm." It can be bigger too. Always check what is mentioned in your online profile.

They need at least 420 x 540 pixels. So you should be fine.
