How much would it cost for a dentist visit in Canada? My travel insurance doesn't cover it and I am going to need work done. Are there any options to make it cheaper for a visit.

Depends what you need done. Could be anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars.

Here are rough averages:

- Cleaning: $120 - $160
- Extractions: $120 -$200 (per extracted teeth)
- Fillings: $120 - $160 (white amalgam is a little more)
- X-rays: $100 - $140 (panoramic are cheaper)

Visitor to Canada insurance (you can get quotes at HealthQuotes.ca) only covers emergency dental costs. When a person is a resident they qualify for personal health insurance which offers the coverage you want (designed for individuals and families). Often times employees get group insurance through the company they work for, which is fully or 50% covered by the company.

Are you certain that provincial health plans cover dental services?

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get a notifiation.

Anyways, dental work varies, and depends on the work done.

Here are some approximate dental costs:

- exams: about $50 per exam
- X-rays: about $120
- fillings:about $140 per filling
- extractions: about $150

And less time consuming to have all the dental work done. Plus international shopping experience.

Have been in vancouver as a PR for a few months now. Went to the dentist for an exam and x-rays. He was very thorough and
charged me about $ 180 total for the exam and several x-rays covering all teeth. which seemed ok looking at what other posters suggest the
charges are.
He suggested I required deep cleaning as my teeth had not been cleaned in several years and he showed me
the heavy amount of plaque built up.

But then the bombshell; the estimate he gave me for cleaning ,which would require 3-4 sittings, was $ 2500

I told him I would think about it.

Is that real or is it robbery? Any comments please?

It was a robbery. :D Even if you need a deep cleaning it could be twice expensive as a regular one. And of course not even close to $1000 or even $500.

Once I had a dentist who pulled my ONE tooth out for... $500. It was my last visit to him. :D

thanks Regina. I have not got it done yet. It was just an estimate he gave me.
I will look for someone else for the cleaning.

But I am surprised how professionals in medicine can behave like greedy businessmen.

They have student loans to pay and medicine is one of the most expensive subjects to study
