Congrats to both you and your visa office for such a timely process .
Its looking like December was the golden month to file , holidays in account and all.

I have tried to sign into CIC , with success, but the only info that shows up is my name , and then the option to remove consent for myself or others from ever accessing info to my application via the internet. Can anyone tell me if this is the norm?

Hi everyone,

First time posting here but have been lurking around for awhile.

Have a few questions about the application to sponsor your spouse. I'll start off with some background information first:
- I'm a Canadian citizen sponsoring my Pakistani wife. I came to Canada when I was 5 and we're both 24.
- I was engaged in December 2011 to my wife.
- Completed Biomedical Engineering in May 2012 while my wife got her Masters in Business Administration.
- Went to Pakistan at the end of June 2012 with my family.
- Got married in July 2012.
- My family came back earlier and I stayed until the end of September 2012.
- Found out she was pregnant before I left. We were both really excited.
- Going back to visit her and taking parental leave from work in March 2013.

Here are my questions:
Q1: Regarding question 26 on IMM 5490 (Sponsored Spouse/Partner Questionnaire) . It asks to provide documentary evidence for how we communicate when we are not together. About 99% of our daily means of communication are through instant messaging on Facebook. I checked and we have a total of 16,500 individual messages on Facebook. I put that into a Word document and it takes over 1000 pages in size 11 font. I also have all of our text messages saved, they're over 5000 in total. That's a lot, plus many of our messages are extremely private and would prefer not to share them with anyone else.

Q2: Related to the Option C Printout and the last Notice of Assessment for the most recent taxation year for the sponsor. My dad has a personal account who files all of our income taxes, and for some unknown reason, Canada Revenue Agency did not receive my income tax information for 2011, the deadline was on April 30, 2012. I have the T1 General form from my account completed. Can I send that in since it contains all the required information, or should I first file my taxes first and then send the Notice of Assessment once Canada Revenue Agency receives my tax return information, which will take between 4-6 weeks? I have the Notice of Assessment for 2010 and can get a proof of employment letter from my current employer.

Q3: The Document Checklist asks for my wife's original educational documents. She's going to apply for some jobs and they'll probably ask for her original degree and certificates, especially the MBA. What should I do and does CIC ever return everything once the application process is complete?

I can't help you with all your questions, I am sure others will read your post and reply though!


With regards to your communication proof, you definitely do not need to send in private/intimate conversations or texts. You have a large amount so pick through it and send in what you are comfortable with. Try to go over it all and send in things like milestones of your relationship. CIC wants to see how the relationship matured from meeting to marriage. Things like deciding to marry, making plans to visit/marry , talking about what you expect from a spouse ect. I also sent in screen shots of our msn monthly files, showing the sizes of each one. That was just to show how much we talked. I sent in like a week of each month. My husband and I have been together for 4 years so I didn't want to over do it. I also had phone bills as well as e-mails, I tried to send in a decent amount of them all. Keeping in mind that in case of an interview or request for more, I have things they have not already viewed.


About your taxes, I am NOT an expert, that being said.... I do recall reading on my forms when filling them that if you are not sending a notice of assessment from the last taxation year, it clearly states to write a separate letter explaining why. Personally, I would get the taxes done and up to date, then send the application in 100% complete.


I couldn't help but wonder, if your wife is going to have a baby, in three months, why would she be applying for jobs? Not that it is any of my business, and I by no means need an answer, it is more just that it doesn't add up to me.... Is there any way to go to the university she attended and simply ask for another copy? Perhaps telling them it is for CIC/immigration purposes?? If they stamp it saying it is for CIC right on it then they can rest assured knowing it will only be used for that? Just a suggestion...

I do not know if you get everything back but I have heard you can request it.

Hey uzafar88,

I'm not really sure which checklist you are using, are you talking about sponsoring your spouse? because I didn't see anything about original education documents before... maybe it's requested by the VO? in any case, I would not send the originals... from what I remember from the application, the only originals requested were the police certificates - the rest could be copies, or certified copies.

Hello!!
Can you please add me to the December spreadsheet!!
I sent my application to sponsor my husband (from the USA) to the Ottawa visa office.
According to Canada Post it arrived on Dec 10, 2012. I received an email of confirmation today (Jan 8,2013) from CIC that they received my application on Dec 11, 2012. He got his medical done in September 2012.
Hopefully we will be getting sponsorship approval soon.. (crosses her fingers).

We did this on our own with no lawyer.. and I am starting to think I over payed my fees.... if that is the case will CIC give me a refund?

How much did you pay? It should be $1040 total (for most). If you paid too much, they will refund you.

The refund will probably take awhile I expect.

They say they will do it without you needing to request it, but I have no idea when that will be. I suspect some time after your PR application has been processed, and it's fees accounted for in Phase 2.
