Just had a quick question regarding drivers licences. My husband is from New York State and will be moving to Toronto, Ontario where I am if we EVER receive our COPR. but I was just wondering if anyone has any informant regarding what he would have to do. Does he keep his own New York State licence, have to apply for an Ontario licence or what's the protocol there?

Thanks on advance!

yup i'm just trying now (though for what reason I have no idea!) and it's being very slow
It's always slower in the middle of (North American) working hours. Because we're all OCD.

I remember reading the same thing too but I don't think it's true anymore. They update whatever and whenever they want.
I'm proud to say I haven't even tried to log into Ecas today...I don't know if I will be able to say the same thing by the end of the day. ;D

It's absolutely true, I've checked 3 times today already, even though the system has been totally useless to us so far!

Driver's licencing is managed by the province. I'd suggest checking the Ontario website: http://www.ontario.ca/driving-ontario

In general, there are reciprocal arrangements between Canadian provinces and US states. For example, here in BC I had to obtain written evidence from the US (in my case New Hampshire) that I'd been licenced for at least two years - to get that letter I had to personally appear at the NH DMV in the state capitol (and pay the $15 fee, of course) since the original date of my licence did not show up on the licence or the driving abstract.

With that I just turned over my US license, that letter, and the fee and they gave me a BC licence.

Since I'm from Ontario, I'll explain haha. You need a MVR aka Driving Record that shows you've been driving for at least 2 years. Like CG said, you might need a letter. We didn't need to personally go there, hubby had to send a notarized letter down for his information. You then go to Drive Test near you and say you are exchanging your US licence for an Ontario one. You'll have your vision tested and have to pay $75 dollars for your G and you'll get a permit (temp. Licence) and the card will come in two weeks :)

I am also from Ontario so hubby will have to go through this soon. Where does he get a MVR aka Driving record from? Would that come from his insurance company in the US?

tks

You can get it from your DMV. In some states you can order it online.
