We landed yesterday at the Douglas PoE (Peace Arch). I was so nervous, I always am when I cross the border. But they were very friendly.

We rolled up, told them we were landing, and after asking us if we had tobacco, guns etc they had us pull over to the side. When we got up to the counter I explained I had my COPR. He asked about my car and if I was importing it. I said later, as I had only just gotten my title from back home in Oregon. He wasn't bothered by this at all and said I could start the process now, but it didn't matter I could wait. I had pre-filled out my B4's and they only glanced at em. My B4's were extremely vague and in huge groups (Clothes and Costume Jewelry; Household, Decorations, and Art; Computer parts and video games; etc...) but they didn't bat an eye. I did write the serial # for my Viola and my DSLR camera. I didn't bother putting my wedding ring on there and he said it was fine.

They had us go sit down and read some stuff about my PR. Then they called us up, said "welcome! You're officially a permanent resident!" and handed me this freaking cute lil flag on a stick hahahaha. He didn't even read my b4 i don't think. Lol. Just stamped it. They didn't care about it at all. He spent the most time explaining the ins and outs of maintaining permanent residency. how to get my SIN #. And sent us on our way !!!

Congratulations! I had the exactly same experience at that border crossing :) And my little flag is still under my TV :p

I can advise you not to go for your SIN until the CIC system updates that you landed, since some people were returned and had to go twice. I shouldn't take more than a few days. Also (I assume you will be in BC), start your medical insurance application right now, since it takes a while.

Good luck, and welcome to the beautiful BC ;D

Congratulations, Amalthea! It sounds like your landing was a breeze :)

Did they ask you when you would be moving? I am still waiting for my COPR letter, but even if I got it today and I could land tomorrow, I am not planning to officially move until August (I need to get some financial stuff done as well as finishing my Dr's appointments, etc.) I am afraid that if I told them that, they might ask me to wait until August to land...?

Oh, service canada was on the way home so I stopped and grabbed my SIN yesterday! thankfully it went fine:) appreciate the heads up though!

I applied for MSP last week with a copy of my COPR. I think I may call and see if they want to know that I've landed, got my SIN etc.

No, but they asked where I was going to be living and had me write down my address in Canada so the PR Card could be mailed there. When you get your COPR, as long as the expiry isn't before August obviously, personally I would just wait to land until you're ready to move, just in case.

DO NOT tell them you are not moving right away. That is something they don't want to hear, and I've heard of some people being refused their PR, because they expect you to move as soon as you get your CoPR. My advice is to either postpone the landing OR to land, but don't mention you are not moving yet. You can leave ofc later on, and if they ask why you can always say it was unexpected/not planned.

Hi All,
I originally posted my enquiry in the DEC2014 thread and it was suggested that I post in this section, so - I am hoping that I can get some clarification from folk who are in a similar situation aka more knowledgeable :-D

Our file has been with CPC-M for almost 6 months which it currently is "in progress" (see below status)....

I was replying to an e-mail that CPC-M had sent me and received a reply advising that the file is now being processed by Ottawa??

Does this mean that with the current processing times for Ottawa, that it will take another 16 months, or, another duration?

I see that Dec Applicants some are already receiving the PR?

I'm a little confused so hoping someone can please clarify for me please.

Our application was submitted/received by CPC-M Dec 2014 and began being processed May 2015.

Appreciate the help,

Thanks

Sounds like your immigration consultant gave you bad advice. All your kids should be listed on your immigration paperwork, even those who don't plan to join you. You almost excluded your children from ever coming to Canada via family sponsorship by not having them listed. It sounds like Mississauga saved you a lot of potential heartache, if any of them wanted to ever join you in Canada.

Your application being transferred to Ottawa means your sponsor was approved to sponsor you. The application being moved to Ottawa is where you will be reviewed and they will decide whether you have a valid marriage etc. The 16 months is for 80% of applicants, it can be longer or less, but the average right now is 8 months'ish.

"In process" is good news, since that means that someone at Ottawa has looked at your file. As best as we can tell, the bulk of delay in an application is simple administrative queueing, where the file sits on somebody's desk unopened.

Your file has probably not moved between May 21st and June 19th, when you submitted the documents and medical tests requested by CPC-M/O.

Does this mean that with the current processing times for Ottawa, that it will take another 16 months, or, another duration?
The 16 month timeframe is from original submission. However, as others have said this seems to be a very pessimistic estimate for ordinary applications originating in America. (Edit: this is untrue, see below.)

I see that Dec Applicants some are already receiving the PR?
Some are, yes. However, your file may take a bit longer than others of your cohort because of the document request and additional processing necessary.

Sorry Majromax, this quote is incorrect, the present time frames are 55 days for Miss and 16 months for Ottawa. They are not combined to equal 16 months.

WOW. Your immigration consultant told you that you didn't need to include your kids??? Uh, only if you EVER wanted them to join you in Canada at any point in the future!!! UNREAL. Your lawyer is an absolute idiot. I'm so glad they let you fix it...

If your kids hadn't been on there, even the ones you weren't sponsoring, they would be EXEMPT from family class sponsorship for the rest of your life.

Hi Everyone, thanks so much for the replies.

Yes, the information hubby received from his consultation with the consultant was definitely incorrect. I hate to think what would have happened if we'd have given them the file to handle in its entirety! I remember reading somewhere while we were in Australia that the rules had changed for who could obtain citizenship automatically (think it was back in 2009)... so of our 5 kids, 2 were born before that date and the other 3 were born after that date!

CPC-M have been fantastic with us, very helpful and I am glad that we did the whole application process ourselves! Did my head in as I am sure all of you who have gone the family sponsorship route can attest to! I think needing to have the kids included on the additional dependents form as well as them having medicals has probably added 6 months to the process thanks to the consultants incorrect advice! Had I have known it would have all been done at the same time when I did mine and the paperwork back in December!

Aside from that.... we will just continue on with life and wait for an answer. We are already living in Canada too.... so I am not sure if that has any bearings on 'landing' or what the process is there either?

Oh, my mistake! I must have misremembered, since the instruction you linked is obviously very clear.

As a small appendix to the discussion, more detailed but slightly out-of-date processing statistics are available via open data. Of all spouse/partner family class applications finalized at CPC-Ottawa in 2014, the median (50%) time was 9 months. (You can separate it out by class by playing around with the drop-downs on the first page.)
