Thanks Kiri, Nexus, and Keesio.......my problem is I have quit my job and my lease is up so no lease to tie me to the US. I do have 2 bank accounts open and I DO have a backup plan in case I have to return (which is living with my parents). I can't show any utilities, a job, a lease, etc. after the end of this month. That is my concern. If we come back to the US in October for a short weekend and then cross back into Canada they will see I have been in Canada for all of August, all of September, half of October and only in the US for 4 days and then I cross back into Canada. If I tell them I am visiting for 6 months then that raises questions about my son and schooling. That would tell he is attending school in Canada. See my dilemma? I just pray that I will have passport request and be close to COPR by October and not have to worry about long term proof. I am basically cutting my ties and taking the plunge in hopes that I will be through the process in 6 months. If I have to come back to the US because of a major delay then I can do it but other than that it's all I have.

Well I do have proof of my storage locker where all my furniture is stored. Would that be proof that I am coming back? I wouldn't leave all of my possessions behind.....
US Citizens have one additional option that can be pursued at the border if they decide to refuse you because they don't think you are going to leave: you can apply for a "Temporary Resident Permit" (TRP). This is not a visa, but rather a discretionary document that permits someone who is inadmissible to enter Canada despite the inadmissibility.

OP 20 "Temporary Resident Permits" has a section on "Early Admission" (5.15) that covers this instance:

The Minister’s delegates may issue a permit to allow foreign nationals to enter Canada before
they satisfy the requirements for permanent residence. The officer must be certain this action is
essential.

The requirements are normally routine processing steps and may or may not be stated in the
Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Examples include the completion of background checks
or a medical examination. They do not include the waiting period to apply for criminal
rehabilitation.

If an officer has any reason to believe that a foreign national could not meet all requirements for
permanent residence after completing all processing steps, early admission is not appropriate. If
the officer already knows that the foreign national is inadmissible for any reason, the officer
should not grant early admission.
This is discretionary permit but the case of a spouse coming to Canada is one in which it would normally be issued. There's a $200 fee for this application and you do need to be prepared to show that your application only requires "routine processing steps". It is not something you ask for up front - it's something you ask for when you think they're going to refuse you.

They can also be requested from a visa office abroad (again, only US Citizens have the ability to apply at a POE, everyone else must go through a visa office).

Okay, time for triple posting........ :p Shortymac is updated. Tuesdays seem to be the day for PPR and Sponsor Approval. I got both while I had a doctor's appointment on a Tuesday.

Anyway, I got this last week and wanted to share - I felt it was relevant for many of us. (Sorry it's blurry, my iPod isn't cooperating.)

Even more fun, on the back it has the "Learn Chinese" part. The word to learn is Lion, which is my zodiac.

Awesome! I look forward to next Tuesday and hope I'm in the PPR group for next week!!! Do you mind copy and pasting what the email said? My hubby has no clue when it comes to this as I am the one updated on everything from this forum and he will be the one looking out for the email. What email address did it come from too?? (If you are ok with sharing that)

Another question or advice I am wondering about given that a lot of people are asked for proof of financial support - My hubby will be looking for a job here when he gets here along with applying for school - Although we don't have savings - I work fulltime and will be supporting us while he is looking once he lands - I don't know if screenshots of my pathetic savings account will do much so was thinking my dad could write a letter stating he is financially able to support both of us should we need it at any point (though we would never expect him to do so) Do you think that letter and the original proof of employment letter from my original application would be enough?

Based on everything I've heard, *probably* it would be fine. But in our case, once my husband is in Canada, he's going to stay put (same deal, we are selling our house here, so his ties here will be limited). I figure that the risk of a problem happening isn't zero, and the consequences if something does happen are really big.

Can your family come visit Canada for your son's birthday/Christmas this year? Or can you plan to have a big get-together after you have your landing documents?
Thanks for your input. I have thought about just waiting but I'm not sure if I want to. I guess it will depend on where we are come October and how comfortable I feel with taking a chance. I have gotten through the border without a problem so far but there is always that one IO having aa bad day who could give me a really difficult time. The good news for me is that if I ever do get turned away that I DO have a family close by who are more than willing to take us in and help us out until we can get settled.

Good luck to you when your husband finally gets there!!! :)

I think in your situation your attempt to immigrate legally is well defined and evidenced by what you've done in the PR process. Remember, you can always log in to ECAS and show them your file! I'm not a Immigration lawyer but I think you are within your right to come to Canada
to wait out the last few months of your PR process. (because you get 6 months here as a US citizen) Enrolling your son in school because you will be here for 6 months during the school year (assuming he is an accompanying dependent on your application) also is reasonable.

If the PR process does come up in your crossing, I also think that "here is my storage agreement, just biding my time until the process is finished" is a good idea too. It further indicates you are respecting the rules.
Thanks Nexus, you bring up some good points. I am not doing anything wrong, I have waited for almost 3 years to finally be with my partner and we are in the final stages. If all goes well we will have PR long before the 6 months is up. I plan to keep as much proof as possible on hand just to be safe, though.

I am sorry for what may appear to some of you as a double post (as many of you also watch the "US Outland" thread as well and I have posted this over there as well), but I am very worried that our passport request was sent by Ottawa and we never received it....

I finally received our GCMS notes (they took longer than 30 days so emailed them asking about the delay and received the file within an hour!)

The good news it appears they believe our relationship is genuine :D... But here is the concerning part - when reading our GCMS notes, I come across this -

-request letter sent: -PA: -ppt copy

does anyone know if this would have been my husband's PPT request??? if so, then we never got it (he has been checking email and junk mail everyday) and it was sent May 8!!! I have emailed an inquiry to Ottawa...and now we wait to see if they are going to respond to my email :( I'm sure there is some time limit to send the ppt copy after the request? and I'm thinking that time frame may have passed already?

Any ideas on what to do from here??

Would love to hear from anyone who has ordered and reviewed their notes, as to how their PPT request appeared.
UPDATE:
Our MP has just found out that, yes, our PPR was sent May 8 and it never got to us. They are submitting the pp copy for us and things should start moving now. If we hadn't ordered out notes a month ago, we would still be waiting and never have know that something had gone wrong. Grrrr... sounds like we should have had COPR in hand by now.

So here is my advise to ALL applicants....spend $5 and order your GCMS notes a few times during the process!
