Hi All,

I have recently received my OWP and I work in IT/software industry where few of them are still hiring.
On the below website, they have requested to refrain from applying for SIN unless it is urgent. However, it is difficult to understand what is considered as urgent. Like whether should I be having a job offer, or whether my filed of work is still hiring.

https://www.canada.ca/en/employment...ate/notices/coronavirus.html#social-insurance

People who have applied for SIN after this situation, your inputs will be valuable. It will help us get some examples of what is urgent and what is not.

Moreover, their online service for applying for SIN is currently unavailable and it may take up to 25 days to get SIN if applying by mail. They are currently not accepting applications in person.
Also, I'm not sure if companies would hire without SIN, considering the current situation and by assuring them that I can apply for it after having a job offer as that would be considered as urgent.

Would say having a job that you are starting would be an emergency situation. If you wait the service Canada offices are likely going to be open before many receive their SIN by mail.

ok thanks. hoping for the best, at least that they start online applications or something. I had thought of the same, but not sure how companies work here, whether they would be willing to hire without SIN. I wouldn't mind if they hold my pay until I submit my SIN.

Just checked. Looks like the website is working and they have removed the urgent non urgent conditions. So I guess I should be able to apply online.

Would just expect it to take at least a few weeks and you have to send in your passport.

I would personally apply regardless. Worst case scenario they say no.

I stand correctly I guess they have now updated the procedure.
I meant about sending the passport. i just applied, just had to fill some details and upload soft copy of documents. Anyways I'll update here in case they ask for original documents or any other info.
