Hello @scylla , @canuck78, @Naturgrl, @wonderbly and others,

I need your inputs and help. My first semester (1 year PGC) is going to start from September 2021 and I was planning on traveling at the end of August 2021. However, I came to know that I'm pregnant with possible due date around April 2022.

Now in this scenario, what do you guys suggest I should be doing?
  1. Start my first semester online from home and defer second semester (if allowed) to May 2022 and travel after delivery? Will IRCC extend my study permit accordingly?
  2. Travel now and complete first semester online in Canada and defer second semester (if allowed) to May 2022? What will be my status in Canada after I defer second semester?
  3. Defer my complete course to May 2022?
If there are any other options for me, then please let me know.

Appreciate your help.

For 1&2;
You have 150days once your DLI approved your deferral/leave from studies. If more than 150days happens while in Canada, you need to change status to visitor or leave Canada.

If you defer complete course to May 2022, and if you are outside of Canada, deferral need to be approved by your DLI and you need an updated LOA. If it happens you are in Canada, you need to follow 1&2 above

Unfortunately , I don't know how to advise in this scenario as a lot depends on what your school will allow you do. I suggest contacting them fast and asking about your deferral options. Once that is clear, you'll be able to make a more informed decision.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, I hope it's a smooth one for you.

Thanks Simba. I’m actually not clear as to what you suggested in first para. Did you mean I have 150 days before I defer my studies even before I start my first semester in September?

Thanks for the wishes Wonderbly. Can I ask, if my DLI is ready to defer my second semester to May 2022, what is going to happen to my study permit? How do I inform IRCC about this? Or do you think I should defer everything to May 2022?

Taking an unscheduled break after the 1st semester might affect your PGWP in the future. But if your school gives you authorization and you present all the medical proof etc, then you should be fine, I guess.

You can defer till May 2022 provided your school agrees. You will then need to send a webform to IRCC to let them know cos the length is longer than 150 days. However, in May 2022 you'd have a brand new baby, how would you be able to cope with that, travelling to Canada and jumping right into studies? I guess it's doable if you have a strong support system around you.

Thank you wonderbly. I have already shot an email to the Admissions of my DLI and also would try to connect with them over call this week. I’ll have to discuss with family too.

I reckon the safest option for me would be apply again for Fall 2022, probably with SOWP for my husband and TRV for my child.

I can’t think of any other safer options :/

Hi Sonya,

first paragraph meant if you started or intend to start and then defer a semester. However, if you want to defer before start of the program, you will need updated LOA as long as you are outside of Canada. Provided your TRV is valid in future, you can update IRCC about your situation so when you travel in future, they already know.

Congratulation for the good news…Hope everything will be smooth
