Hi everyone. We were told that it is $550 to file off the immigration family class package (me sponsoring my husband). Is it exactly $550? Should it be a check? And if so, who should the check be made out to?
Thanks.

Yes, $550 (exactly, in Canadian dollars) is the minimum amount that you must pay before applying. It's suggested that you also include the $490 Right of Permanent Resident Fee as well, but it can be paid later.

Paying by check? Do people still write checks these days?! LOL!

I don't believe that paying by check is an option:

Can you pay by credit/debit card online? If so, you can print off the receipt and include it with the application. You can have a family member pay with their card and then write them a check as well. The person paying doesn't have to be you or your husband.

Hmmm...I just noticed that CIC doesn't show the $490 RPRF that is also required, even though it can be deferred until it is requested by CIC, if necessary.

Total `price of admission' for your husband will be $1040 in the end.

Hi Ponga, thanks!

Well, I didn't know how it was done, I was just assuming that you include a check in the package when you send it. So, since this can only be done online, I assume only a credit card can be used? When paying, do I have to include any info, like, who the application is for and any kind of application file number, or anything like that?

We were only told that we have to pay the $550 now. We won't be paying the other portion until he gets his PR. We don't have the money right now and we were told by a consultant that people don't pay that until later. I hope it will be fine.

Also, how should this be mailed? I remember reading posts in the past about people's stuff getting lost and that there was a certain way to mail this to ensure it would be get there and be fine.

Thanks! :)

and PS, I didn't see an option for Interac? Only credit cards.
Which is why I didn't mention Interac. ;)

A debit Visa card would not be the same as an Interac card...right?

lol, well you said credit/debit, so I assume by debit you meant a bank card which is usually under Interac online :D I don't see an option for using a bank card. Which options did you choose on the dropdown menus to get this? (the link you gave me). We will be paying in Canada, and it's for my Outland American husband to come here. Not sure if you saw my other message about mailing options and if I need to include a file number or anything like that during the payment process. Just curious how it works. Thanks again! ;)

The RPRF must be paid before they will approve the application and issue the COPR. You will also potentially introduce an extra delay in processing when they put your application on hold, pending receipt of the RPRF payment. Your choice...

His bank card is a debit Visa I believe. I am not sure if we could even use that though because I am seeing something about only Canadian bank cards being valid. I think I may just use my credit card.

Zardoz, are you sure? The consultant who has been helping with our application told me the $490 is not due until the application is approved.

They don't accept canadian visa/debit unfortunately or at least mine didn't work. I tried that when I paid my fee's. It kept coming back as declined. I tried my visa and it worked perfectly.

Yes. The application is not finally finished until the applicant lands in Canada and has the COPR signed. That will not happen until the RPRF is paid. In fact, they will not issue the COPR at all until it is. Get a new consultant?

Yeah your best bet is to pay all fee's up front. If you only pay the one part you could experience delays in your application.

Payment of the RPRF will be required before issuance of the permanent resident visa for applications processed at visa offices or the permanent resident record for applicants in Canada. Each contact with the applicant should include a reminder that the RPRF is required, and that the visa will not be issued or the client will not become a permanent resident, as the case may be, until payment is received. It should also be emphasized that early payment of the RPRF will avoid delays in finalizing the processing of the application for those classes where it is appropriate, such as priority family class cases. Other cases, such as family class sponsorships of parents and grandparents, where the processing time is known to be long, RPRF instructions specify that the client should wait to pay RPRF until contacted by CIC.

That's strange as I read that they only accept Canadian institutions. I don't have a Visa/debit card. I just have a BMO debit card and a credit card. I plan to use my credit card (Mastercard) as I wouldn't have enough in my bank account. Since it says it only accepts Canadian institutions, I'm assuming my husband's American Visa/debit would not be accepted in the system.
