Hey there, was wondering if someone can answer a question for me. If you are from a visa exempt country, will you still receive a COPR?

Everyone gets a COPR, but applicants from non-exempt countries need to send their passport in to get a visa attached. The COPR is the paper that you must present to the immigration officer upon landing.

ok i am confused....if they are visa exempt why do they need to get a visa attached?

Oh duh editing this message sorry I read that wrong

One more question....if your VO asks for your passport to stamp it(non-visa exempt), will your COPR
come back when they send you back your passport?

Yes, when you have been approved and they send back your passport the package will definitely have the COPR (actually 2 copies) in it.

Because Visa exempt countries are only exempt from Tourist Visa's. Obviously the visa's everybody is applying for here are permanent resident visa that allows you to obtain your SIN and register for healthcare.

I have a question on this.
My fiancee has a visa-exempt passport so she never sent her passport in, and when we did the landing process the officer took away any temporary visas we had (in our case a student visa). So now we only have the COPR with no Visas. Before we receive the actual PR card in the mail, if we leave the country she must travel as a visa-exempt tourist.

For non-Visa-exempt countries, do they also take away the PR Visa when you do the landing process? If they don't, does that mean the PR visa stays in your passport after landing so you are free to travel in and out of the country while waiting for your PR card?

Yes they do take away the paperwork. You are not supposed to travel out of Canada whilst your PR card is in process which I believe takes about 60 days. You can however apply for dispensation (I am not sure where to though).

That said if she has a Visa exempt passport, it should not pose much risk if you do leave the country whilst your PR card is in process.

Many people who receive their COPR's have to return home to tie up loose ends, so I am sure it is relatively straight forward.

Study permit is not a visa. Visa is required in order to enter a country. Visa is not a proof of your status being in the country. It is a permit which shows the status and until when one is allowed to stay. She only had the study permit because she is from visa-exempt country. For example, an international student from visa required country needs a visa and study permit. Visa might be expired while s/he is studying in Canada while s/he is legally staying as long as the permit is valid. When a tourist visits Canada, with or without visa, when s/he is inside Canada, the stamp on passport which s/he gets when entering the country, gives her/him the status, like until when s/he is permitted to stay.

In your wife's case, she can travel since she does not require a visa (and she did not have visa from the first place) but is not supposed to according to CIC until she receives her PR card.

Thanks for the clarification. I should say then when she gave her COPR to the immigration officer, they took away her study permit then (since its not needed with a PR card).

We shall soon put to the test how easy it is to travel on a visa-exempt passport while waiting for the PR card, since we're going out the country next week... fingers crossed for the journey home!

How did it go? I'm in the same boat as you, my wife and I will need to travel before she recieves her PR card.

Experience posted here: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/how-to-travel-when-waiting-for-pr-card-t124916.0.html;msg1950514#msg1950514

Absolutely no problems at all. Just say travelling as tourist at the foreign airport (assuming she's visa-exempt)... and at the Canada immigration the CoPR document was fine to prove PR status.
