Confusing Situation regarding Study Permit & Visa

Hi All.

I got my study permit application approved last week and received a visa to enter Canada on my passport that I have submitted to VFS. My program of study will be for one year starting September 3rd, 2019. However, given the fact that my passport will expire on August 26th, 2020, the granted visa was only valid up to the expiry date of my passport.

It is a very confusing situation for my as I don't understand how I could possibly resolve it. I though of renewing my passport and request to extend my study permit from Canada, but it seems like if I received a new passport, I must apply for a new visa which is impossible to do while I'm studying. Have any of you guys faced this situation before? I would be grateful if anyone can help me out with this matter.

Don't panic this is not a huge problem. After you apply and get your new passport, you must follow this guide to renew your TRV here
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/visa.asp?countrySelect=CA#applications

Your study permit will be valid till the end of your studies, you will receive this once you reach your first Port of Entry in Canada. You can have an expired TRV and still study in Canada. You only need a TRV to return back.

Its not impossible to apply for new trv in canada, dont know why you think that. Get your new passport and apply for new trv before it expires, it is however not necessary to have a trv while in Canada only to yravel to Canada it is required. Also if you get a new passport and your old trv is still valid you can just travel with both passports no need to get a new one immediately.

Hi!. I panicked because the process seems to be completely vague. The approval letter of my Study Permit (Letter of introduction) says " Your passport must be valid beyond the period you intend to remain in Canada. If not, the validity of your study permit will not be issued beyond the expiry date of your passport". That being said, I checked the online guide to renew my TRV, it says that my study permit must be valid.

Hi ! thank you for your reply. I thought of renewing my passport and travel with both passports. But it seems like they won't accept it as in the Letter of Introduction (Study Permit approval letter), it was stated that "If you obtain a new passport before your visa expires, you will need to apply for a new visa".

Do you know someone who tried this with no issues ?

Thanks.

Then you will have to do a study permit extension and then apply for the TRV. Don't panic, see what is issued at the border, all this can be resolved in comfort in Canada.

Hey Kollina,

I am actually experiencing something similar. My study permit was recently approved (I applied from Pakistan) and I received my passport back this week. The visa has only been stamped until Jan 2020 as my passport expires in the same month. Now I have applied for a new passport so that I can apply for any visa or study permit extensions once I am in Canada. However, my question is; when I arrive in Canada I will be issued a study permit by an Immigration Officer; the study permit that I will be permitted, will it too only be valid until Jan 2020 or will it be valid for the entire 2 years that my program is supposed to last for?

The thing is if they issue a study permit for 2 years then I will only have to apply for a new TRV for traveling purposes. But if they issue a study permit at Immigration only until Jan 2020, then I will have to apply for both a study permit extension AND a new TRV.

It is extremely confusing and stressful. I have sent out several queries to CIC and have not yet received any replies.

What is the stressful part? either way there is no issue, extending study permit is not a big deal.

Anyway you will get permit for your entire period there is no reason for them to limit your sp time.

the stressful part is that I thought I'd have to apply for a study permit extension and then after that, for a TRV but you are saying that at my First Port of Entry, I will be issued a 2-year permit so that means I will only have to apply for the TRV--that does clarify a lot so thanks

And another thing is; I'd have to arrange all my documents, including new financial statements again for the study permit extension application and then after that the TRV application but hopefully now I only have to arrange everything once for TRV

Hi, did you end up getting the study permit until September 2020 at the Port of entry in Canada?
