So for people like myself....who have been in an online relationship with someone for two years (we've met and stuff like that...lots of photos etc)
What does this mean?
We're getting married on the date of our two year anniversary.

If and when he gets approved to come to Canada, will he be allowed to work?

Sorry..this is just confusing to me

Yes, he would still be allowed to work. This has nothing to do with that. But the date you are getting married is your two year anniversary of the date you met. I'm going to make an educated guess that the 2 years means from the date you got married or started co-habiting, not dating.

This part of the article makes me pause:

"Under the law, that new spouse becomes a landed immigrant once the marriage takes place. So a marriage license is a cheaper and quicker way of getting into Canada compared to applying to become an immigrant, a process that can take years."

Is the reporter talking about how things currently are in Canada??? That once you are married you are automatically a landed immigrant?? Is he really saying that as an immigrant person married to a Canadian, I don't even need to apply to be an immigrant?

Media posting misleading info? Nahhhhhh
Ugh! These idiots. You think they could at least research what they write! It's like when they mix up PR with citizenship. I hate that.

You're probably right on that one ;)

Look, I am FOR fraudsters being thrown out. Definitely FOR that. But there is great potential now for the new victim to be the person I described above, who never had a thought of fraud in their mind. Appeal you say? BACKLOG! H&C application? BACKLOG! CIC is now involved in my divorce? GREAT! Ugh. We are now into a "he said she said" type of deal that could/will get ugly. I am hoping the Minister has considered this scenario. We will see.
I think you make some excellent points!

It's so easy to say "oh well, when the relationship doesn't work out, you can just go back to your home country" when one is not in that person's shoes. I also think there sometimes is somewhat of a misconception going on that it's everybody's dream on this planet to leave their home and move to Canada ::). I know a lot of "international" couples, and for a majority of them it's not about moving to the "country of their dream" but rather finding a way to be with their loved ones. And that involves some serious sacrifices - leaving family behind (who is often upset that their loved one leaves them; I for example am still struggling with that), often give up careers and more importantly their home. I, for example, don't feel that Canada is "the country of my dreams" (sure, it's really nice and everything, but in my eyes Europe is even more so...). I choose to immigrate (or at least try to...) because of my partner, who has more family ties than I do and who has far better career (and salary) options here. And for that I am giving up a whole lot (like you said). So if in one year from now he screws up (eg cheats on me) and the relationship fails, I would just get sent back (after paying taxes for 3 years - I even paid taxes on a salary I got from Switzerland ::), volunteering for Canadian associations, having made friends and so on and so forth)?

It makes me so mad when I see people comment on "how easy it is to move across countries/continents" when probably none of them ever even left their province/state.

Besides that I fear that the new rules will just be an additional burden on the already overloaded system. I watched that CBC documentary about immigration fraud a while ago and they said that they didn't have enough immigration officers to deal with the sponsors' complaints/appeals (as far as I remember there is only a handful or so...). So where on earth are they gonna get the resources to deal with all the extra bureaucracy now?

I know! Or illegal immigration with legal immigration or someone seeking asylum as a refugee. All completely different things.

But you would think a CBC reporter would do basic research before writing that kind of stuff....

They just need to spit out what the public is eager to read, and since the public (SADLY) doesn't have a flying clue of how immigration really works and all they wanna hear is that there'd be no more heart-breaking stories, then that's why this kind of sloppy-written articles work out really well anyway.

Why in the name of any god would you want to talk any immigration jargon to them when "Govt invites people to just pop in at Pearson and become citizen next day" That's the mind-set, sadly, media-fed too of course.

Of course it might be that the two years would start from when the applicant lands.
The words seem to be "conditional visa", not "conditional marriage".

There is very little understanding of immigration process or procedure amongst Canadians.

We need to remember, "Don't try and confuse the issue by using facts" :)

I am in the same situation as you, however, if something ever went wrong, the only reason why I'm in Canada and planning a life here is because of my husband, so I would go back as soon as possible. Seriousl what is the point of staying in this country when my whole family is somewhere else? I would need LOTS of support to get over the fact that my now 12 year relationship with my love is broken. Why on earth would I stay here?

Am I seriously the only one who would not stay? Am I missing something here? I would go back to my old very wonderful life, to my old friends, to my old WARM 12 MONTHS A YEAR home and parents to support me and be there for me in the hardest moment of my life ever. Why would I fight to stay here just to face it all alone?

No. You are not the only one. Going into this process, it was something I made clear to my husband: if the day ever came when he did either of the two things I told him are deal-breakers for me when it comes to marriage, the next he heard from me would be from my lawyer in Jamaica sending him the divorce papers. I am moving to Canada for him, and because of him. I have a tightly-woven family that is geographically scattered, but it is centred here in Jamaica, and if worse comes to worst, this is where I will be. I really don't care what kind of life we would have built or how much time I would have spent in Canada, I would just want to go home, and if home wasn't with him anymore, then it's Jamaica.

Well, it's not always that straightforward though...I believe I would go back if our relationship would fail, but I am not entirely sure (my parents are both very old, they are selling our house and there might be no place to stay; my sister might move to another country soon, my friends are really scatter all around the world etc).
For me it's maybe more so about the principle of it. Even though I might want to go back to Europe in that case I just feel it would be just wrong if I would not be given the choice after having contributed to Canadian society for years already (worked here, payed taxes here etc). I just feel it would be really unfair.

I want to hear some dissent here. :p

Hubby tells me I can be intimidating because I have such STRONG opinions. Really??? LOL! He's right. Sorry folks. :-[

But honestly, I WANT to debate this issue. I fully intend to send comments to CIC as directed in the Gazette. But I want them to be smart and balanced. My head is skewed one way so help me find a middle ground, if possible. I've got a poll running on my facebook page and it's really interesting to see how people are voting and some of the comments. PM me if you want to vote!

This is a real divider of people. The passion in this one is tremendous! I'm a member of a group of professionals (about 200) that share information on a listserv about immigration law and it is crazy how so many like-minded people can be so far apart over this issue.

So I'm putting the challenge out there to people who want to disagree but might be shy or new. Speak your voice. Maybe you will even change my mind! ::) Ok, that's not likely but I promise to respect your opinion and not beat you up!
