Hi guys :)

My husband will be landing in two weeks. I noticed that the declaration card that we get in the airport has a section for residents and a section for visitors. Which section does he need to complete since he is not a resident yet, neither he is a visitor?!

Thanks!

By the time he goes through the Customs section, he should be a permanent resident. He could get a spare card and fill each out differently so that he can offer whichever the CBSA agent thinks is correct. That could save time at the gate.

The OP's husband can ask for 2 customs declaration cards - fill one out as a visitor and the other as a resident. Then border officer will then decide which one is appropriate and discard the other.

My husband landed as PR in December. We filled out one card, as we are used to doing, then when we got to the desk they told us it was supposed to be two different ones since we were landing. She crossed out both cards and had us both fill out new ones, then scribbled lots all over my husband's anyway (she did it using the red immigration crayon thing, so it looked like a kindergarten art project - rather funny!).

If your husband is landing as a PR and then staying in Canada, then I would fill out the resident part. If he's landing but leaving again then fill out visitor (as he is activating his residency but not yet becoming resident - this was our case). When you go to the immigration desk, have your husband say he's landing as a PR and they will sort you out from there. :)
