HELP!

I am gathering all the documents for our common-law sponsorship application, but I can't seem to find a document that states that I am single and have never been married. Problem is I left Germany when I was 9 years old, and have not been 'gemeldet' since that time.

I have contacted my local Standesamt in Germany, and spoken to people at the Rathaus, but to no avail. I keep getting told I need different documents: Ehefaehigkeitszeugnis, Personenstandsurkunde.. someone more recently has told me I could just go to a Canadian notary (I am currently living in Canada) give a "eidesstattliche Versicherung zum Familienstand".

Could anyone that has gone through the same process please tell me which document you provided to prove your marital status?

Thanks so much!

Rebecca

Hi Rebecca,
Where does it say that you need a document to prove you are single?
If your going through common-law then you will be looking for many documents to prove your relationship, not lack of one.
Unless this is a country specific or inland requirement i dont think you need this.

we applied common-law and we never had to provide any documents that we were never married before.
i havent heard of this.

we just checked the box saying never previously married, never previously common-law

if you were married before, you need to provide paperwork that you are not divorced. but other than that, i dont think you need to provide anything to prove you were single before.

Even if you are still married (but not in the relationship with your spouse), you can apply for common-law, as long as you are eligible, say cohabitation for 12 months, with your common-law partner.

This is Canada! not Germany (I know Germany requires such document) ;).

thanks for all the replies. I had spoken to a friend of mine (he's Swedish) who applied for common-law with his partner, and he said a document proving that I'm single is good to have for the application..

I guess I will just do without :) I AM ticking the 'never before married' boxes, and now the require us to sign a common-law partnership declaration with a notary present, so hopefully that will be enough! :)

Thanks again for all the replies! That makes my application much easier!!
