I’m a Canadian citizen that has been living overseas (Japan) for a number of years. My partner and I have been living together just over a year now (3 years+ of dating) with utilities being a mix of his and my name, and both of our names on the housing contract. Aside from those we have no other financial ties together.
We plan on getting married, but wanted to wait a few years yet to save money and find a good way to please both families ceremony wise. In the meantime, as my job contract here is finishing next year, we want to make plans to live in Canada.
From my understanding, we could apply for common law as we are now, correct? My main concern is that the only thing really stopping us from getting married is the hassle of planning a wedding that both families can attend, and the cost. Would having nothing major stopping us from getting married hurt our application? We COULD just sign the license at city hall and forgo the ceremony for now, to the disappointment of our families, if it would be better for our plans.
Any tips or suggestions? He’s not a big photo person but we do have some photos from our dating history, as well as chat logs and such. Any other evidence that would be helpful or necessary?
