I'm PR and my girlfriend is an International student we both full-time students, her working/study visa expire in 8 months.

If we get married / or apply for common law is it possible she get extend her permit?
How long is the procedure to get working permit after getting married?

what do you recommend we should do to ensure her stay here?

Thank you,

Alec.

renewing work/study permit is irrelevant from marrying to you.
It depends on when she would finish her study.

1. if she will continue to study then she can renew her study permit and work permit (assume it is off campus work permit)

2. if she finishes her study, she can apply for PGWP then continue to work while waiting for PR.

3. if she wanna stop studying, then she can apply for inland app with OWP.
so she can continue to work.

ps. recommend to finish her study.
If she stop studying soon after applying for PR, This action may raise suspicion.

hops it helps.

Once you are married you can apply to sponsor her. The processing time from Japan is currently 11 months, though this is not an average and the time it takes to process her application might be much quicker.

You can apply to sponsor her inland or outland. With inland, she has to stay in Canada living with you throughout the processing period, which for inland is 26 months. She is advised to not leave Canada during this time. With inland, she can get an open work permit after about 4 months.

If you apply outland, she can stay in Canada on her current study permit. She can renew it if she continues to study. If she does not want to keep studying, she can then stay in Canada as a visitor.

I would suggest you apply outland. The processing times for inland are much longer than for outland, and she does not need the open work permit right away.
