College not on CIC list of participating institutions-is that bad?

Hi, my question is, if someone will choose a college which is NOT on the CIC list of participating institutions, does it lower the chances to receive a study permit? Those on the list are simply too expensive, so my friend wants to go with a 6months course in a different college. Does he have to explain why he chose a different institution?

I am not sure but not being on cic list lowers the chance to get study permit as well as lowers the chance to get work permit after studies too.

If so, then yes - that's bad. It means your friend will not qualify for an off campus work permit or a post graduate work permit.

Also, schools that aren't on the list above tend to be viewed very negatively by Canadian employers.

Your friend should pick a school on the list.

It will not lower the chances of the visa but you can not expect a work permt off campus after finsihing ur 1st term and not post graduate work permit and finally PR if required!!

I just read through your old threads.

If this is your friend from Afghanistan then I don't think there's any way he's going to be approved for a study visa by applying for a six month course at an unrecognized school. CIC will assume he's just trying to get to Canada.

If he wants to be approved, he should apply to a recognized (public) college for a course that's at least one year in length.

Also, many of these schools are on the "bad" list for a reason. They tend to overcharge students, give them worthless degrees, etc. They were a big rip off and put on the bad list because of complaints!

Yes, it's my friend from Afghanstan.The problem is, that none of the listed institutes have courses less that 2 yearas, at least the one he wants (accountng or somethng busness related since he has a bachelor in that one). And he does not have the money to afford $15000 per year. That's why I was thinking of another college, whch is not listed, but licensed in Alberta, it's 6 months and under $10000.
What if he did still that one, would he be able to work on LMO?

No, you can't hold a study permit and work permit with a LMO at the same time.

Of course one can have a work permit and study permit at the same time. I mean LMO type of work permit, nothing wrong with that. I am a foreign worker and hold a study permit.

You can hold a study permit and an off campus work permit at the same time.

If you hold a work permit that required a LMO (you didn't use the OCWP to get the job) then one of your permits isn't valid any longer and you're either studying or working illegally.

Yes, it is allowed, although not exactly ethical as he would basically he lying about his intent to get into Canada.

However, a work permit with a LMO won't do him any good in the long run unless he gets a job that meets CEC or PNP criteria. Depending on where he is and his skills, finding something that qualifies and gives a work permit may be extremely difficult.

When I first landed in canada with a study permit, I was with 2 other girls that were admitted at george brown college. I was approved at York U. My interview was 2 min, why are you in canada, what school will you go to, welcome to canada and I was asked to step outside. My 2 friends had a very long landing experience simply because they were going to george brown college.
George Brown is in this list that you are referring to, but because a lot of people apply through a third party for colleges it seems that it raises red flags for cic.
So I can only imagine what's gonna happen with an college that is not approved, you can always be refused entry if the border officer is not convinced that you're in canada to study, even if your study permit has been approved.
Your friend should definitely look for a college that is in this list.
