CLB9 IELTS Disappointment - A Warning

I have just received my IELTS result and it didn't surprise me but disappoint.

L 8.5 R 8.5 S 8.0 W 6.5


'TIME' failed me on writing. While I was on 250 word essay the second time I glanced on my watch only to find out I have 47 seconds left and that's what killed me. So 'time' should always be kept in mind during writing test.

Going for resit.

Definitely plan for another attempt but apply for a revaluation! It's just half a point!

How did you manage 8 or above in L and R ?

@ couple: You are actually CLB 10 for the 3 others.

@ hariskhan You can answer or take notes during the recording in the listening portion, and then in the reading section, you can review the text after reading the questions and choices.

Wow.. That is really an impressive score you got in IELTS...
sad that you missed CLB9 by just 0.5 in writing..
If you are thinking about reevaluation... just keep in mind that there may be chances of getting less score also and during the period of reevaluation, you cant use your IELTS result...

Is there practice material for L and R, that helps with getting 8 or above ?

Listening tests I'v practiced with, give me top score. But IELTS test is a different animal.

I found it frustrating, too. I got 8 /7.5 /9 for W/S/R, but also "just" 8 for L, where one needs a 8.5 for full points. What made me really angry was that I understood everything I heard just fine, but missed two spots because I wasn't fast enough / not good enough with multitasking. I swear they said everything relevant at the same time and I just can't write and listen at once very well.... Was more a test of multitasking than of English. Grr.

That's exactly how I felt about listening part of IELTS. I did get a good score, but I thought that the whole conversation was moving extremely fast and was more of a multitasking test than English.

i feel what u feeling bro , i got L/R/W/S = 8/8/6.5/7.5 that was pretty disappointing , i am going to retake the IELTS after 6 months

That's exactly how I felt about listening part of IELTS. I did get a good score, but I thought that the whole conversation was moving extremely fast and was more of a multitasking test than English.

Well, at least I'm not the only one! Sort of comforting. Although it of course sucks for you, too.

When I registered for IELTS, I got a link for some free online test materials. I read some of those, including two sample essays. What I learned there was that I should keep it quite formal, and use words like "nevertheless", "however", "moreover" and so on a bit more than I usually would. ;-) I didn't use any other ressources.

I am very much impressed with your ielts scores..

I'm a native English speaker and got 8.5 for L/S/W and 9.0 for reading.

The prep material helps but having an excellent foundation in English is what probably matters most. Even then, I used the Cambridge IELTS prep material for listening and identified deficiencies in my speaking a couple weeks before the exam. I only had 10 day to prepare because the test centre found a space for me

Some of native speaker friends got in the 6 or 7 band (they didn't prepare or don't have good language skills) and others got 8-9 in all the four sections. My friend's husband got 9.0 for W/R and 8.5 for L/S. But my boss didn't do well because he fell asleep in the test. :-\ . It's possible to get a really high score. Just put your mind to it and practice, especially listening.

I think overall band is not important to get basic ielts related crs points. You get points based on your individual scores in r-w-l-s respectively.

important for skill transferability if you are applying with foreign work experience and education. getting 0.5 less in writing costing me 50 points.....
