I qualify for PR as my classification is of type B on the NOC chart. I've been told that I need a rating of 5. I'm unsure if this means i need an average of a 5 score from IELTS or if this is CLB. I've read that CLB score is different then IELTS but can't find a good source explaining the difference.

IELTS grades are not equal to CLB grades but you have to arrive at the corresponding equal.

CLB Level 9
Listening: over 7.5
Reading: over 6.5
Writing: over 6.5
Speaking: over 6.5

CLB Level 8
Listening: 7.5
Reading: 6.5
Writing: 6.5
Speaking: 6.5

CLB Level 7
Listening: 6.0
Reading: 6.0
Writing: 6.0
Speaking: 6.0

CLB Level 6
Listening: 5.5
Reading: 5.0
Writing: 5.5
Speaking: 5.5

CLB Level 5
Listening: 5.0
Reading: 4.0
Writing: 5.0
Speaking: 5.0

CLB Level 4
Listening: 4.5
Reading: 3.5
Writing: 4.0
Speaking: 4.0

How can I confirm what would be needed for the jobcode I have of 4212? I believe it is a a rating of 5, so is this CLB 5?

If so then I have to have these scores at minimum?

CLB Level 5
Listening: 5.0
Reading: 4.0
Writing: 5.0
Speaking: 5.0

No other combination, say for instance this as example?

CLB Level 5
Listening: 5.0
Reading: 3.5
Writing: 5.0
Speaking: 6.5

•If you have qualifying Canadian work experience at Skill Level B of NOC, your test results must match the CLB/NCLC below(see chart):
◦5 or higher for each of those abilities, or
◦4 for any one of those abilities, 5 or higher for any other two of those abilities and 6 or higher for the remaining ability.

You need at least CLB 5, 5, 5, 5 or CLB 4, 5, 5, 6 to qualify.

Thanks for replying first of all. I'm just confused by the two. I understand that I have to be either

Listening: 5.0
Reading: 5.0
Writing: 5.0
Speaking: 5.0

or some combination of 4,5,5,6 when I write my test, but how does this reflect the earlier when you stated

CLB Level 5
Listening: 5.0
Reading: 4.0
Writing: 5.0
Speaking: 5.0

I'm not sure which one I need. I hope when I write my test I'm 5 and above on all and no need to worry but just trying to educate myself. I'm unsure of how to determine a CLB rating for a NOC Code. I think I'm a CLB 5, but not really sure.

Let's say someone gets the following scores:
listening 5.0 = CLB 5
writing 4.0 = CLB 4
reading 5.5 = CLB 6 (there is no 5.5 for reading, so you round down to 5.0 which corresponds to CLB 6)
speaking 5.0 = CLB 5

NOC CLB Level Test result for each ability
Speaking Listening Reading Writing
0, A 8 6.5 7.5 6.5 6.5
0, A 7 6.0 6.0 6.0 6.0
0, A, B 6 5.5 5.5 5.0 5.5
B 5 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0
B 4 4.0 4.5 3.5 4.0
[tr][td]

•If you have qualifying Canadian work experience at Skill Level B of NOC, your test results must match the CLB/NCLC below(see chart):
(a) ◦5 or higher for each of those abilities, or
(b) ◦4 for any one of those abilities, 5 or higher for any other two of those abilities and 6 or higher for the remaining ability.

As you can see, those scores correspond to CLB 4, 5, 5, 6. It does not meet criteria (a) because one CLB is less than 5 but meets criteria (b) - CLB 4, 5, 5, 6. Hope this helps.

NOC CLB Level Test result for each ability

B 5 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0

I'm sorry for this but I'm still confused on how I will convert the test score I receive from my IELTS exam so that it reflects a CLB score. Also I'm confused at statement b above as if the minimum requirements are 5, 5, 4, 5. Why do I need to have a 6 if I have a 4? I could understand a 6 if there was a mark below the minimum in essence meaning I need a total of 19 if numbers were all added together.

the scores you see under CLB 5, are the minimum respective scores you need in each ability to get CLB 5, 5, 5, 5 for all abilities.

The (b) part is saying that, they will also accept one score under CLB 4,
NOC CLB Speaking Listening Reading Writing
B 4 4.0 4.5 3.5 4.0

but you need to have two scores that fall under CLB 5
NOC CLB Level Speaking Listening Reading Writing
B 5 5.0 5.0 4.0 5.0

and one from CLB 6:
NOC CLB Speaking Listening Reading Writing
0, A, B 6 5.5 5.5 5.0 5.5

SenoritaBella,

Can you please help me analyze my IELTS score and what CLB category do I belong.
I am NOC 8253. I worked here in Canada for five years now, so I applied CEC on August 20/12.
Got my AOR on Sept.12/12.
My overall score is 4.5.
Listening= 4.5
Writing= 4.5
Reading= 3.5
Speaking= 6

In your opinion, is this score enough for their requirement?
Thank you. Your help is much appreciated.

OK I think I get this now. So as long as I have two scoreds at the CLB level of 5, it then would be acceptable to have one score at CLB4 and the other would need to be CLB6.

So if I scored on my IELTS test as an example:

Speaking - 5.5
Listening - 5.0
Reading - 3.5
Writing - 5.0

This would then pass as I would have

Speaking - CLB6
Listening - CLB5
Reading - CLB4
Writing - CLB5

Thanks for the patience and adding some clarity.

Listening 4.5 = CLB 4
Writing 4.5 = CLB 4
Reading 3.5 = CLB 4
speaking 6.0 = CLB 7

Per CEC guide:
•If you have qualifying Canadian work experience at Skill Level B of NOC, your test results must match the CLB/NCLC below(see chart):
(a) ◦5 or higher for each of those abilities, or
(b) ◦4 for any one of those abilities, 5 or higher for any other two of those abilities and 6 or higher for the remaining ability.

NOC 8253 is skill level B...unfortunately your score does not meet the requirement and your application may be rejected or if you are lucky the visa officer may not notice. In the meantime, arrange for another test just in case you have to reapply.

You got it!!! Good job! :) I would add that it's better to prepare well and aim for higher scores in all abilities, this way you can be sure of getting at least the minimum.
