Hi,

Has anyone scored 10 in the writing section of CELPIP?

I need CLB 10 in all 4 categories and I have done extensive practice on writing.. it is one of my strengths and I was not worried at all about it before test but I only received an 8!

I have heard that this is a common issue with people, where they do a near a flawless writing section to receive 7/8. In no place does it tell me on results what part that could be '"improved" only what I was able to achieve and demonstrate.

I need 10 in all 4 sections to have any chance on PR as my points are super low elsewhere but can not see how to improve my writing!

Any advice??

I haven't taken the CELPIP, but I have taken the GMAT (6/6 in writing) and the IELTS (9 in writing). The best way to improve is to study sample essays that demonstrate what to do right, and then practice.

There are many books and online resources available for the GMAT, and the CELPIP doesn't seem too different. A good essay has certain basic features and these are pretty standard across most standardized tests. CELPIP requirements are

These seem less rigorous than the GMAT, so if you can write a great 6/6 GMAT essay, you should probably do just fine in the CELPIP. Naturally, don't go nuts with this, as the GMAT is looking for different things so not everything translates exactly.

Once you know what the examination is looking for, practice, practice and practice some more.

I was given an 8 at first but had it re-evaluated to a 10. I've posted about it in the past-- the writing section is very short and I wish they would increase the length of the responses that they collect, because differentiating an 8 from a 10 or a 12 is incredibly difficult in 200 words or less.

Here's the criteria for a 10:

Highly effective proficiency in workplace and community contexts
  • You are able to write short texts with moderately complex and some complex syntax.
  • In social and more formal contexts, you are able to convey your intended meaning with a broad range of common vocabulary and some precise, formal, or specialist vocabulary.
  • You can use written instructions, requests, complaints etc in a manner that will lead to an appropriate and effective response from the recipient.
  • You are able to effectively and appropriately convey your attitudes towards social and more formal circumstances.
  • You are able to organize day-to-day messages and formal messages coherently.
  • You are familiar with common and some formal writing conventions, such as inviting guest speakers, arranging meetings with clients etc.

I got 12 in writing with CELPIP. I would say don't use complicated phrases or very long sentences. However, keep in mind to not use oversimplified language as well. Make sure there is an overall flow to your answer and that it makes sense. If you can use a few unique words without going too out of context then you are good to go.
