Hi all,
I've been Canadian PR since 2007 and open work permits since 2009 prior to this. I meet the eligibility requirements as I've fulfilled my stay.
I have been back in Australia since April last year and want to apply for citizenship from here.
My PR will expire in April next year I think so if I were to apply now and the wait time is longer than I have left will I be refused?
If I can apply y can I do the oath from Australia or will I have to go to Canada when they tell me to?
TIA

You need to continuously fufill the residency obligation as a PR (720 days in the last rolling 5 years) up until you take the citizenship oath. Applicants who failed to do this had their citizenship grants rejected every time.

While it is mathematically possible, your application might undergo sterner scrutiny/residency questionnaire as you are outside Canada.

No, you cannot take the oath in Australia.

PRs don’t expire. PR cards do. When have you been in Canada during the past 5 years? Do you have plans to return to Canada to apply for a new PR card? Currently you can do the path from abroad in limited circumstances and this was only a recent Covid-related change. Impossible to know whether this will continue to be possible and whether this will only be possible in certain situations.

I was under the impression I had to be in Canada for 3 years out of 5 to retain PR. Next year will be 2 years out of the country hence maybe making me lose my PR?

No. It's 2 out of every 5 years.
