congrats green eye bunny.

We just got an interview request for Nov 2, so we've got a trip to beijing coming up, and hopefully we come back with a visa in hand.
Why does Beijing request your passport if they're going to call an interview? Beijing won't start the process of issuing a PR visa before a decision is made -- i.e. at the interview. So holding the passport before then doesn't save any time, and the PR Applicant might need the passport before then.

This is more serious in other embassies, that take much longer than Beijing. Nevertheless, asking for the Applicant's passport before a decision means the applicant is without the passport for weeks, or even months, and this seems inconsiderate on the embassy's part.

Does anyone understand why the embassy asks for the passport so early?

greeneyebunny - thanks, of course we will let you know what happens at the interview. Maybe I will bring my audio recorder in my pocket and after we can give an exact transcript :p Like a spy.

Toby - I think it's because they're inconsiderate, don't care so much about the applicants needs, and think they are the kings of the world because they have a job in the embassy. But who knows?!?

no, I think they suspect me of being a russian living under the guise of a canadian citizen, I read in the news recently that they found several russians traveling under passports of canadians whose deaths had been covered up. I do have a bit of an unusual accent for a Canadian born citizen. lol

If you're right we'll have to see whether the VO was interested in having me or my husband come to visit.

If your accent is funny to others, you must really be Canadian!!

How did the Russians who took dead Canadians' passports change the photos?

well, I think they would have stolen or bought the whole identity of pretty young people, then applied for new passports as adults so any photos that had been connected to the identity would be from a young enough age that no one would think twice about the differences in appearance.

I find the best way to convince people you're not a spy is to run around blatantly telling them you're a spy. Who said I wasn't?!?

Yep, we got his visa the same day!!!

Actually, I'm the Canadian citizen and he's my husband. Neither of us is Chinese, but I've got a one year contract teaching English here and he's a dependent on my visa.

The interview was not too bad, they just asked him some questions with me out of the room, then asked me questions with him out of the room to confirm. They were saying we'd need to get a criminal record check done in China, until I notified them that we officially have been living here less than 6 months (9 days less) so they agreed to waive that requirement and just give us the visa.

HAPPY!!!!!!! ;D ;D ;D

No one mentioned a criminal record check to me, even though I had been residing in China for almost two years when the interviewed occurred. My wife, the Chinese applicant, had of course submitted her police check with the initial application.

Is asking for a criminal record from the sponsor done often?

In all this talk about time lines for the Beijing embassy, I hope you all feel incredibly lucky to be going through Beijing, and not Hong Kong. My wife's process took from November 2009, when Hong Kong got her application, to early April 2011 (interview) and finally early July 2011 (passport received in the mail).
