Hi, I would like to know the steps required for processing PR card for my child. I have Canadian PR, but my younger daughter is born in US holding American passport. By the time of her birth, we already got the card last year so would like to know the process how child can enter Canada and procedure to get the PR card. Please advise

Your daughter can enter Canada using her US passport. Once she's inside Canada, you can sponsor her to become PR:

Child sponsorship will take around a year. Your child can enter a US citizen as a visitor for 6 months. You can apply to extend their stay. You will need to purchase private medical insurance in most provinces because your child won’t qualify for provincial insurance in most provinces. What province are you moving to?

You can only start processing when you are living in Canada and plan on remaining in Canada during the sponsorship period although short vacation is overlooked. Your child will only qualify for provincial healthcare once they have PR so you should take out private medical insurance for emergencies. Routine care will be out of pocket. All the documents required and instructions are included with the application.

If your wife can live in Canada, then yes, you can submit a PR application for the child once your wife relocates to Canada.

The US passport doesn't really impact the process either way.

Your spouse should be the one sponsoring your child if you don’t plan on being in Canada permanently.

I am also in the same boat, we are PR of Canada, and my husband got a PostDoc fellowship from the US as J Visa, so we are staying here now and my baby is a US citizen. Can I apply for PR for my newborn without going to Canada as we are staying in the US because of the fellowship that is given by the Canadian Govt?
If one of us has to stay in Canada, then can I apply for PR and go to India for 4months during the processing?

You cannot apply from outside of Canada.

You must be living in Canada to apply.

Four months is too long to leave Canada during the processing of the application and will put the approval in high jeopardy of refusal. If you aren't ready to relocate to Canada and live here, then wait and sponsor your child for PR later.

Thank you for the quick response. Initially, I thought of applying later, but now the processing times are too long(almost 19 months), and staying with a newborn without Insurance is very difficult. So, wondering if can I apply it now.

Btw, how long will it take to process PR for the newborns? Any idea?

Take out private insurance for emergencies and pay for any routine care out of pocket. The cost is minimal compared to daily living costs of living in different countries for a year. Would plan for it to take a year so unless you can remain in Canada with your child for a year with a short 2-3 week vacation then it is not a good idea to sponsor now. That would mean your spouse would miss out on the first year of your child’s life. Age of child doesn’t make a difference.

Hi - I recently moved to Ontario. When we moved my daughter was 20 months old and started daycare. She got sick once every 2 weeks. We had a really challenging time finding a family doctor, urgent care or any sort of help really. I would highly recommend you start looking for a family doctor or a pediatrician before you move. Sometimes they have a wait list so it would be good if you can put your name down. Hope this helps.

Thanks.

You’ll need to specify that you won’t have OHIP when you call. Some physicians will not be willing to see private insurance patients. Some are not set up for private pay and some clinics or hospitals (except ER) have chosen to only see provincial insurance patients because they can’t meet the demand for those with OHIP. Most will not put you on a wait list until you get OHIP since people who have OHIP are always supposed to get priority. Most without OHIP end up going to walk-in clinics. In most cases, paediatricians only see children will more complex health needs versus in the past where they were essentially GPs for children. General care for the whole family is now supposed to be done through GPs. There are still some paediatricians out these who see kids in general but rare. Family member who is a paediatrician so have been well-trained to spread the word.
