Hello,

My wife has a work permit from an employer that has laid her off. That permit expires in August. We are leaving the country to have the wedding reception in June 2013 and will return about a month later.

What should my wife do? She is trying to find work now, but if she doesn't, how long and is it simple to transfer her status from worker to visitor? Around when should we think about applying to change her status? Is there another recommended route?

We want to ensure that she is allowed back into the country upon return of our wedding reception.

Thanks!

If her status expired in August 2012, she has already lost her status and need to exit Canada anyway.
it expires august 2013, not 2012. so what should we do? she is looking for work but if she is unsuccessful, what are her options to ensure she can stay in canada?

She is entitled to stay in Canada till the expiry date of her WP. If you takes her outside of country, it gets more difficult for her to come back unless her visa is still good till 2013. She can change employer whenever possible.

Yes I understand all this. What happens if she does not find another employer by the time this work permit expires? Can she apply for a visitors visa before her curre t permit expires? How far in advance should this be done? I wa t to make sure she can legally stay inside the country so what is the best option considering her current work permit is set to expire August 2013?

Send out application to change status anytime before WP expires gives her implied status, however, the decision is at CIC. If application for visitor permit comes back negative and her WP expired, prepare to exit Canada.
No 100% garantee for visitor visa. Best to find an employer or PR.
