If you have a valid Labour Market Opinion that the employer got from HRSDC, you can then apply for a work permit.

The employer has to apply for it from HRSDC after advertising the job on the jobbank for a minimum of 2 weeks, and then has to certify that there were not Canadians or PRs available or qualified for the position. Until it is approved you can't apply for a work permit or work.

The job has to be temporary to get an LMO. Depending on the province, city, LMOs take anywhere from 4-12 weeks.

Doesn't really matter what the result was. Immigration and LMIA rules have shifted quite a bit over the years (back then there were no LMIAs but LMOs instead). So what happened six years ago isn't really relevant to today.

If you are looking to change your status from full time student to full time worker, you'll need a full time job offer from a Canadian employer and that employer will need to obtain an approved LMIA. Once you have these two things, you can apply for a closed work permit tied to that specific employer.

Hi Scylla. I hope you are still active here. I am wondering if students under a 2 year program in Canada (just finished the 2 semesters of her first year and have found an employer who is willing to apply for the LMIA) can shift her Student Visa status to Working Visa status? If so, will it be that hard to be approved if even if the employer is very supportive?
