The Immigration Authority in Canada is proposing changes in the policies for skilled workers desiring to move to the North American country.
The changes would be implemented in the point-based system of the program. The Immigration authority in Canada is also looking to review the educational qualifications and bring in a stricter policy to assess the legitimacy of job offers. These new proposals are representative of the present labor situation in the country and would help the immigrants blend in better within the Canadian society.
Under the new proposals, the minimum number of points for qualifying as an immigrant is still the same at 67 points out of 100. The applicants are also still required to complete the minimum requirements for being eligible for the program.
The changes are proposed for the three factors of selection – language requirements, applicant’s age and previous work experiences, and the number of points awarded in each of these criterions.
i. Proficiency in Canadian Language
Under the new proposals, the Immigration authority is now laying emphasis on more proficiency in either English or French, the main official languages in Canada. The number of points for the languages which was earlier set at 16 points is now increased to a maximum of 20 points. Proposals are also underway for establishing a minimum requirement in the International English Language Tests (IELTS) for more professional jobs such as doctors, engineers and nurses.
ii. More points for younger applicants
To attract a more younger and active population to add to the skilled population of the country, there is a proposal to increase the number of points allocated from a maximum of 10 to a maximum of 12. But the new proposals are also suggesting bringing down the maximum age of qualifying as an immigrant from 49 years to 35 years.
iii. Emphasizing on more work experience
While the new proposed changes would bring down the number of points allotted to the work experience category from 21 points to 15 points, the number of years of having work experience has been increased.
Besides changes in the point based system of the skilled worker program, is suggesting changes to the educational requirements as well. Under the new changes, applicants, with fewer years of full-time education, but with diplomas in their trade, would be able to claim the maximum number points as well, which was not possible earlier.
Other important changes proposed are in the employment requirements. These include the assessing the validity of the job offers of the applicants in a more stricter manner and requiring applicants to get their credentials recognized by a licensing body in Canada, for the professions that are regulated in Canada.
