Certified Copies + Translations

Hello everyone,

Just looking for some advice, we have collected all the documents for my husband's Spousal Sponsorship to immigrate to Canada. I am Canadian and he is Belgian and we currently live in Belgium.

I thought everything was done, we collected all documents etc etc. We have hired a lawyer to help with this. I got all the documents translated from Dutch to English with an affidavit (which took some time to do as it is not practiced in Belgium). Our original lawyer at the firm no longer works there, and the new lawyer has come back and said we need certified copies of all the translated documents. I went to the city hall, they made copies and stamped it, but they didn't write, "this is a true and certified copy of the original document", so I am not sure if it will be accepted. Anyone have advice for this? If it is not good enough, I assume I need to go to a notary public?

My next issue is that once it is certified, the certification will be in Dutch which means it will have to be translated. That means I will have to pay again for new translations and an affidavit. Pretty annoying, but I do not see a way around this. Unless someone has advice?

Ours is in Dutch but roughly translates to "seen as a true copy"

We are in a similar situation. I am canadian and my common-law spouse is Belgian. We are living in Canada together. We needed his birth certificate translated and we contacted the federal embassy I believe in Brussels who emailed him a French/Dutch/German cover page that certifies it to authentic with links to where they can check the authenticity.

Strangely, his parents told him that when they went to the municipality to get the copy of his birth certificate stamped, they wouldn't stamp it.

Interesting, it might be different for different communes but we got an international version of his birth certificate that was in Dutch/French/German/English, so we didn't need to translate. But I suppose I could try and contact the FPS (Foreign Affaires office). I assume that is what you are referring to?

Didn't you need to stamp/certify the birth certificate since its not the original? I'll have to ask my partner later today exactly what place he contacted.

My lawyer only specified that translated documents need a certified copy. To be honest though I am not entirely sure. They did not say anything regarding the birth certificate.

I have the same issue regarding stamps being in foreign language, can u plz tell me what did you do?
