Ok, that makes more sense. I am trying to figure out for sure as well as I have to do this very soon. I am pregnant and my son will be born in the US where I have insurance but my husband has Canadian citizenship by birth ( he's born and raised in Quebec) so my son can still get it? I ask because I want to be sure he's covered as well for the citizenship(s) which ever the case may be.

Your baby will have Canadian citizenship through your husband. My two kids were born in US as well and they are Canadian by descent through me.

So if your new baby ever decide to stay in US and have a child, your grandchild will not be Canadian.

The only advantage my 2 kids have is the ability to work in the US without any visas required. If they don't have any intention of living/working in the US, I will leave the decision to renounce their US citizenship to them when they reached 19.

Oh thank you so much. I was reading over things and fretting. I was also worried about bringing him back to Canada following his birth ( my husband has school and I want to return with him so he can still spend time with our son). I will fill out the needed forms and or get him a passport(s) so he will be able to visit my parents in the US and then get back home but the process seems confusing. Any advice? Feel free to PM me if that is better so we don't hog the thread. I'm just trying to do this all right.

Screech, can you send me a link to the clause that states my son doesn't have to wait 3 years for citizenship. I know we have to live three consecutive years for my husband to apply, but i didn't know apply the child clause.

Your baby only need a US birth certificate to cross between Canada and US by land only.

Very cool. How old would he need to be when he'd need a passport? I'll apply for his citizenship card right away.

They need a passport by 16 to cross by land only.

I don't think he's a "citizen" just yet. All that was said was that 'by land' he only need his birth certificate to cross into Canada.

The child is Canadian by descent by law at birth. Just that they need to provide proof of it by applying for canadian citizenship certificate for their child after providing proofs.

Awesome!! So I'll worry about his citizenship certificate then for now and leave the passport for later. As I should have his birth certificate or an acceptable certification when I leave the hospital or so I've been told. We'll see. And I can't get his Citizenship certificate without his birth certificate showing my Canadian husband's name and place of birth on it. Thanks so much by the way. I was so nervous as from what I read, it takes 10 months to get his Citizenship certificate and I wasn't sure what I could do in the meantime.

The 10 month is the extreme timeline. When we applied for my 2 kids, timeline says 12 months but they got theirs in 3 months time.

The 12 month timeline are for those who already are Canadians and would like to have a canadian certificate even though they have canadian birth certificates.

When I applied for one even though I didn't need it. It took me the whole 12 month timeline.

Cool, this just keeps getting better. As far as his Certificate, all I need, from the guides I read on CIC's website was my husband birth certificate and mine, which I have. After all they need to verify that one of his parents is Canadian. But I will keep reading up on in the meantime. I have also informed Ottawa about it ( some people said I had to) in regards to my application.

Yes, right . . . confused/thought was still the 'OP'.

When we applied for my kids, CIC at the time wanted the kids ssn, us passport and us birth certificate.

I'm sure the requirements have changed since. So far the website says 1 official government ID is required.

Ok, he'll have his SSN applied for by the hospital and his birth certificate as well and once I have those I can get a passport once I get them in the mail.

See here http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/CIT0003ETOC.asp

Minor children must:

- be under 18 years of age at the time of the application;
- be a permanent resident of Canada;
- have at least one parent (includes adoptive parent) who is a Canadian citizen or who will become a citizen at the same time as the child (applying together as a family).

There is no residency requirement for children. As you are already Canadian, you can apply for your child's citizenship as soon as he is a PR.
