I have just had a reply from immigration saying that I have to get my fingerprints taken to complete my RCMP criminal checks. I am sure the instructions were only to have police checks done in those countries where you have lived for more than 6 months, I have never lived in Canada for more than 6 months. The websites says it can take up to 120 days, is this right?

1. When CIC/CHC did a "name check" on CPIC there is a person with the same name as you and approximate age who has a criminal record in Canada. CIC/CHC wishes to determine if that person is you or not.
2. If you submit paper prints to the RCMP it can take up to 120 days for the result.
3. If you are in Canada, you can have digital prints done, by one of the providers see: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/manuals/bulletins/2009/ob116.asp results in about 72 hours.

Not necessarily most records in CPIC don't have residency nor citizenship on them.

So in this case Pmm, It means the applicant will have to write an explanation to CIC about the delay right, as it is going to take 120 days for the records to be sent to him or will the record go to CIC straightaway?

It is a long wait then.

You can send an email stating that you applied on such and such a date, and according to the RCMP web site, processing will be up to 120 days.

Pmm This is part of the background check right? and it means they have seen something and they want to be sure if it is him/her or not? wow

Had it not been this situation i would think he/she was near and was at the last stage?

dwthomson , have you been to canada before and have you done something when you were there got into tcontact with the police?

My husband is in a similar situation. However, he had lived in Canada for more than 6 months. We just sent in his fingerprints at the end of May, 2010. I hope that CIC will receive the results from the RCMP at least by October! And hopefully after that it shouldn't be too much longer, but who knows.
- His application has been in Singapore now since early February.

As for the criminal record, he shouldn't have any... but his name is rather odd, so I wonder what they found to make them look further! He did get a transit ticket in Vancouver a while back, but I talked to an RCMP officer and he told me that that does not show up, because it is not criminal!

Let me know how things go.
