Hi I am Canadian dating an American. I live on a border town. We live apprx 1 hour away from each other, seeing each other almost every weekend. It works out well. We both have children at this point blending the families would be difficult. We have talked about the future. I would like to remain Canadian in regards to health benefits. He has his own business on the American side. I understand that I can visit 6 months of the year and still keep the Canadian benefits. Which could be one week on one week off. If we married, could we marry on the US side, I sponsor him to Canada. He could come on our health system however still work at his business and be here one week on one week off. Giving him 6 months here. We both enjoy what we have, however are committed to the relationship.

Note that if you marry him and then sponsor him to Canada, after he lands in Canada and becomes a PR, both of you will be required to live together for the first 2 years. This may be an issue if he needs to stay in the US to run his business and you want to remain in Canada to keep your insurance. However if you get married first and then wait 2 years to sponsor him, then the "live 2 years together" thing is waived. The other exception is if you have children together.

Also I'm not sure what province you live in but if it is Ontario, he needs to live in Canada for at least 153 days out of the first 183 days on landing to get and keep OHIP.

Thank you I did not know this ruling. I am from NB. It would be awhile before we could get married if wanting to reside with each other based on children. Also at this point being single for me is a benefit based on child tax credit. It helps me survive because my ex at this point has not paid any child support. Just trying to wrap my head around what may work the best for us up the road. Both being married previously and hurt etc, the bit of independence is nice, and our arrangement works well.
