What are the requirements for a Canadian living abroad to sponsor a spouse for permanent residence. Due I need to return to canada to do so?

No, you do not. If sponsoring from abroad however you need to prove your intentions to settle in Canada once your spouse has been granted 'PR'.

Agreed, I've lived in China for the past 7 years and sponsored my wife without a problem. You just have to be able to prove you'll return to Canada as well as stay there. I've heard people write letters of intent or send in acceptance letters to post secondary schools.

you should be canadian citizen that intends to go back and live in canada.

you should proof or convince them that you will be going back. In my case i provided PhD admission and e-mails to the university and my supervisor.
