@jd219 having a valid passport isn't a requirement. It shouldn't cause any problem and I have friends who had none in this exact situation.
If not mistaken, you're supposed to provide an explanation in the case you don't have a passport for the whole 5 years period, but a simple "had no plans to travel so I didn't renew the passport" is more than enough.

Thank you so much for your response. I asked this because it's for my children. Their passport will expire this Oct 2025, but the Philippine Embassy in Toronto has a new requirement that I should provide my ID and the copy of the ID of their father (if married). But we separated since 2013 and I do not know his wear abouts or has any communication with him or his friends and family. That is why I am thinking to not renew their passport because it is impossible for me to get a copy of his ID. I am just worried that it will cause a problem when we are about to apply for our Citizenship.

Please note that while you won't need to renew their Filipino passport to apply for their citizenship, once your kids are Canadian citizens, both parents need to sign their Canadian passport application. If it's not possible, you'll need to contact Passport Canada regarding how to proceed. To keep in mind for when it's time.

No, you don't need a valid passport but you need to let them know why you don't have a valid passport. It'll be fine, nothing to worry about. But, I would suggest keeping a valid passport as citizenship process can take long.

Hi, I just have a question for those who already got their Citizenship.

Is it a requirement to submit a valid passport in applying for citizenship?

story: my childrens' passport will expire this oct 2025 and I thinking to not renew it because we have no plans of travel. we can apply for citizenship feb 2026, my question is, can I submit the citizenship application of my 2 children with expired passport? will it cause a problem with our application?

Thank you in advance. :)

Thank you for your reply. It is for my children. the Philippine embassy is giving us a hard time just because I could not locate the father of my children. In that case, there is no way I could renew their passport that will expiring this Oct 2025.

Just explain that to IRCC, it should not negatively affect your application. Goodluck!
