Dear all members,

I hope you can give me some advise. We are currently living in the UK, I am a British citizen and my wife is has Pakistani nationality. I'm planning to come to Canada to study (post-graduate study) next year.

The question is if a child is born in Canada while I have a student visa, does the child get Canadian citizenship.

Thank you for your help.

Yes. The child will have Canadian citizenship.

Incorrect. The child will still be a citizen if born in Canada.

Any born on Canadian soil is a Canadian citizen, except the children of official diplomatic personnel. Canada is a jus soli country.....

If your child is born in Canada, (s)he will be a Canadian citizen by birth and a British and Pakistani citizen by descent.

Don't think there are any. Only medical insurance but you must purchase them before getting pregnant. Private insurance will only cover delivery of baby after 9 months of buying insurance.

Any bill that your child accumulate during her birth will be billed (initially) to you and then when you register her birth,it will be paid for (reversed/forgiven) by the government since health care in Canada is free for Canadians. But with your wife's case....they'll bill you her expenses during her hospital stay (labour, delivery and doctor's fees) which may cost thousands :( :( :(

A good medical insurance you purchased before coming over here would help with your wife's hospital bill.

If you are coming as a student and your wife is coming with an open work permit based on your study permit, she might be covered under health care depending on the province. If she works at least 600 hours in Canada before going on maternity leave, she would be eligible for maternity leave benefits as well.

If she is not covered by health care in your province, there is apparently one insurance that you can buy that will cover childbirth but you would have to buy it at least 10 months before the baby is born so it will not work if she is already pregnant.

Hi Everyone, i have a question of my own regarding this topic.

My wife and I came to Canada back in May,14 for IEC, and got work permit from a new employer valid until 2017.
We are both Hong Kong Citizens, and are trying to settle here in Alberta, and I had applied for PR via Express Entry under the CEC class but rejected due to insufficient proof regarding my work experience. (My bad thinking one attachment would mean one proof is all they need for each employment). I am planning to re-apply again with the help of immigration consultant this time.

My wife just gave birth to our first born back last month, and we are trying to figure out what status will the baby have? Since we have planned a vacation to go home this November, we are gathering the documents needed for the baby to travel.

My Questions are:
- Is the baby a Canadian Citizen?
- If yes, is the baby applicable for a Canadian Passport?
- If not, how can we travel with the baby this November?

Will greatly appreciate if someone can share their insight/experience as there arent exact answers online with so many different scenarios and cases. Thanks in advance! ;)
