So my wife is from abroad, and I am from Canada. I am attempting to sponsor her.

I sent in all the paperwork, it was received and the processing has started by an email she received that was addressed by her name and given a UCI number and reference number sent via email.

She set up an account on GCKey and linked our application using that UCI and reference number and linked the application online successfully. Afterwards she received another email on her email account that seemed to be addressed to me (not her) giving a second UCI number and the same reference number.

Now she tried linking the new UCI under her GCKey but it didn't find it. So she contacted me about it, so I assumed I needed to create my own GCKey for it to link properly (thinking there was a primary applicant and sponsor input needed on their own separate and private accounts). So I created a GCKey and attempted to link the second given UCI number addressed to me with same reference number but it returns no findings no matter what I do.

What is the purpose of this secondary UCI number? Is this an error on their end? Is it an error on mine? I'm at a loss.

Also her account is telling her "action is needed" but there are no messages or indications as to what actions are required to move the application on.

Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to answer this.

I'm surprised she received the second email, it should have been sent to your email address.

The second UCI number is for your own use to check your ECAS status.

Everything is normal, the second email addressed to you is your AOR1 (Acknowledgement of Receipt #1). This email confirms that CIC has received your application. You do not need to create a second GCKey account, what's important is that she links the application with her UCI number on her GCKey account.

The "your action is needed" is a common glitch after successfully linking the application. Give it a few days to update and let your wife know to continue checking her email inbox. It is most likely the Schedule A, Medical Exam or Police Clearance Certificate request. Later on, when your file gets transferred to a local Visa Office, you will receive another email and that will be your AOR2.

It seems like your wife will be receiving your emails from CIC, it's not a problem but it's important that she forwards them to you.

Don't worry, you're off to a good start. Good luck!

Thank you very much, that was excellently informative. Thank you for your time.

The second UCI is your client ID. If you call in, you can identify yourself with it.

Email 1: addressed to applicant - AOR1 (please link your application)
Email 2: addressed to sponsor - confirmation of AOR1 (informational. No instructions.)
(note: for those who have a representative, the rep will get email 1 and 2)

Next:
Email 3: Sponsor Approval - a letter attached as a pdf will be sent to sponsor to indicate that you are eligible to be a sponsor
Email 4: Soon after, the applicant will receive instructions to submit Schedule A, PCC, and sometimes medical (though for many the medical request comes months later). If you do not receive Email 4 within a week of Email 3, then I would contact CIC by phone (from within Canada) to ask if there are any outstanding requests (such as Schedule A).

As mentioned above, it is strange that the applicant got the 2nd email intended for the sponsor. However, if she put her email address into the application form where it asks for yours, then that makes sense. My wife and I put the same email address for both of us as we share an email address.
