I thought so and the CBP officer told me so. But either they made a mistake or its not possible, because when I entered next time using Nexus, it gave me B2 instead of H1B. It was an easy fix though, I just emailed the SFO CBP with my scan of i797 and they fixed it in a day. The hard part is finding the email id of your port of entry. Worst case, you have to visit nearest CBP office.
I don't have the answer to your question but i have a question for you. I am considering moving to US for a short term. While TN is what i found to be preferrable choice, why did you go for a H1B? What is the advantage. Good luck to you.
TN is not accepted by many employers where as almost everyone hires H1B employee and are aware of that. I worked for a company in US for 5 years before moving to Canada but when I want to go back on TN, my manager was fine but the immigration team didn’t accept that, it was one of the top 5 credit card companies in the USA.
