Canada is good in many ways but people who work hard and save are the ones most penalized by the tax system. My colleagues in the US are demanding 170k plus salaries but talk about getting anything over 120k in Canada and people will look at you in a strange way. If they wont then the tax-man is standing at the door and emptying your pockets before you go out of it.

US is the greatest country in the world no doubt. the best place for innvoation, to work like a dog and earn like a king. I would rather rule in hell than to serve in heaven.

Obviously US in heartbeat. US has much bigger job market, amazing pay scales, much stronger economy, and plenty of options for weather (east coast if someone loves snow, west coast has pleasant weather, center has tropical weather etc). Cost of living is so low compared to what one earns.. like one gallon of milk for $2 or so. Healthcare is not free, but employer insurance plans are generally very good, and someone high skilled is likely to be with big employer who have even better plans.

The only drawback is immigration system that discriminates based on one's country of birth. They issue only 140k employment based green cards per year (number set in 2000), and people from one country cannot receive more than 7% from that. So this has resulted in huge wait for Indians and Chinese.. for Indians wait is expected to be several decades till which one has to keep extending their temp visas and be employed all the time to have legal status.

Plenty of Canadians themselves are employed in US through TN visa or some other means which speaks volumes on which side of NA is better. I have heard of many border crossing to purchase cheaper groceries too.!

Why do you need 170k? My dream salary is 40k per year, I'm sure it's quite enough.

To answer the question, both countries are great in my opinion, the difference is that Canada has a reasonable path to permanent residency. As long as you meet all requirements you can obtain your PR in a matter of 1 year, whereas in the US you would most likely need wait for years and even decades in some cases.

Also there is no Trump.

Well when you move from a developing country to any developed country, the standard of living is anyways great compared to what was there back home. It will be hard to find the difference among the bests.These human development index numbers don't mean much and you will hardly notice that making any difference in day to day lives. All these multi culture things etc. are nice to have, but not essential.

What matters is ease of getting good job and higher pay scales. Canada is nowhere close to US on that front. And cost of living in US is lot cheaper compared to Canada on top of higher wages. Canada is lot expensive on every front (housing, groceries etc.) and will continue to remain so due to its lower population.

And 80% (may be more) of world's top 100 universities are present in US. Canada just has 3 or 4, and nothing in top 25. You could argue that 4 is good for the population that is living in Canada, but this thread is about GC vs PR. So when one takes GC route, their kids have plenty of extraordinary options to choose for their higher studies. The best possible option for a extremely bright kid growing up in Canada is UoT or McGill and their brand is nowhere near the likes of Harvard, MIT or Stanford.

It´s not all about how much money you can make, there are many other factors involved in the decision to immigrate to a certain country. Among them safety, healthcare access, etc.

Well to be fair, in the US you will pay much more for kid's post-secondary education than in Canada. This is a huge expense if you have multiple kids.

In-state tuition is still okay in US. UC Berkeley instate tuition is around $14k, which is like $56k for four years. UoT is $6.5k for first year, then $12k per year, which tallies to $43k. Not much difference considering the fact that UC Berkeley is much top ranked university compared to UoT.

Also just a part of higher wages (either from parents or the kid himself when they join workforce) would be sufficient to offset this difference. Even if a student were to take loans, his ROI through salary would be lot higher and the student can close his debts much sooner. USCs get something FFASA which is educational loan at a subsided rate.

Someone in Quora reported that his son went on to make $400k right after his Stanford education. UC Berkeley is similar league, so you can imagine the ROI on it.

I would definitely choose US over Canada. It's way better in terms of job compensation, cheap food, gas, and sometimes house (if you choose not to live in the Bay Area).

Out of 2.8 million diaspora, one million live in US. 350k to 1 million Americans live in Canada too, but Canada's population is 35 million, and US population is 320 million. So if things like healthcare, education were that great compared to US, why so many people from Canada would move to US?

And only 8 million Americans live outside US, which is a mere 1.7% of their entire population. It also says that there is no need for Americans to move out for any reason.

I think salary is a big factor. Many native Canadians in Vancouver, BC are moving down south lately to find better jobs. That's why it's a bit easier for us to get in. However, I think Canadian government should find a way to increase the median salary for us.

Wow is that the wait time just for PR? That's ridiculous. I had a friend from Spain that wanted to come here a few years ago, and I told her she's better off going to London. She's in London now.

It all depends on one's priority...
I have lived and worked both in US and Canada...now in Canada...I still find US is better but again that's what I think...My priority is money and living in a debt free house asap....so US is my choice...I had to leave because the work visa was expiring and my company did not have GC policy in place....It was not by choice...

One of my friends, all settled in US, is ready to come to Canada with his family...He has received his ITA and would be coming soon to Canada...his GC is already in process so he can live in US as long as he wants...but his priority is to get his parents and in-laws here to live with them....which is a distant dream in US...

So its not just money and opportunities sometimes....there are other reasons as well....
