Canada (prefferably in Calgary) Monthly Living Expenses

Hello! I'm currently thinking of migrating to Canada, preferably in Calgary and I'm trying to figure out the living expenses for someone who might be going there alone (or with a friend) so that I can gauge how much I'm supposed to make and or bring in if I'm to live there comfortably and at the same time still have some savings to bring home.

I've searched through some sites and forums and most of them said around CAD $3000 per month would be the monthly cost of living (rent etc, if people could break down the expenses I'd be very grateful) but I looked at the dates and they were in the year 2012 and it would be for a family of 4. Since I'm thinking of going there next year (2014) I'd like to know the cost this year?

Also, I've been hearing about flooding in Calgary? Will it be too much of a problem when I live there? If it is, what are the other places that would be good to live in?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest some parts of Metro Vancouver where there is no chance of flooding and more weather-wise than Calgary.

The housing market in Calgary is tight not only due to the recent floods which reduced availability but because the economy has jobs to offer and people constantly move to Calgary. Prices will be determined by which quadrant of the city you live in. The SW and NW quadrants are more desirable, SE picking up and has some high end estate around McKenzie Lake. NE is the least desirable and has the largest immigrant community. A decent 2 bedroomed condo is easily around the 1400 mark so with family of 4 your 3K figure doesn't leave much room for both accommodation and all the other necessities e.g. public transit is 100 bucks a month and parking rates down town are some of the highest in North America.

Good one! Yeah Calgary got rained out this year, but aside from that and the gusty chinooks, it's a nice city! :)

If you are moving alone and can live with roommates then cost of you living would be around $1000/month. But it all depends what standard of living you would like to live.

Thank you for the suggestions and input!
Try get somewhere served by the LRT (rail)...this rules out much of the South East.

Sorry for the late reply, but thank you once again for the input!

I'll consider the LRT thing since I'm pretty sure there's going to be a lot of commuting in my distant future.

Hello,

I am planning to move to Calgary. We are a family of 3. our daughter is 4 years old. Can you please suggest cost of living (decent may not be lavish). I am an IT project Manager and my husband is a businessman(will be looking for setting up some trading/import venture). Can anybody advice, how is Calgary for both?

Cost of living for family of three with no school going would be around CAD +/- 2500. I know only about the Engineering and Technolgist jobs and they are pretty much available (but right now market is very slow) for IT jobs I don't know if calgary is a good choice.

There really isn't a great place for IT jobs in Canada, part of that is, like the USA, they've exported much of their IT sector.

Secondly, the foreign experience/education thing will make it harder on you, so I would first suggest getting local training/education as well as start getting your face out there and building up local references to get your foot in the door for any decent job to start.
