Sorry to budge in on this topic and by the way happy new year to all! may 2012 bring better things to us all!
I am planning on doing an LLM on either alberta or ontario and already own some winter gear, tough my move from Mexico to Canada is going to be somewhere between july and august.

which one is better, bringing my winter gear over or just buying new stuff once winter arrives?

thanks in advance!!

Unless you are in the Arctic, you won't need winter gear in the summer months (july and august) in Canada.

If I needed to walk dogs three times a day, and, living as I do in Central alberta - then yes a Canada Goose is a sensible choice, it'll last for ages, keep you warm and they look good.

I have a North Face for normal days (-15 ish) and if i'm outside doing chores - or for any length of time in the normal (-40 with the windchill) winter temps - then I have a Helly Hansen goose down.

However I totally agree that layering layering layering is the key if you don't want to spend a fortune.

Just make sure your top layer is 3 sizes bigger than you need it ;)

What breed are your dogs? I'm not sure if I can bring mine in -40 with windchill!

Agreed, brilliant clothing.

For those in Ottawa - Arcteryx clothing is often on sale at Bushtukah http://bushtukah.com/
You're in Ottawa, then, Baloo?

Since I have nothing useful to say, I'll comment that Ottawa is one of the nicest cities in the world -- for all EXCEPT the winter months!!!!!!!
