Hi there

my girlfriend right now has been living with me for about 14 months. She has temporary resident status here for two years and as of now we are currently filling out paperwork for an outbound, , common law sponsorship. As of now, she is listed as a common law with the CRA with me , she has a Ontario drivers license and she’s under my tenant insurance and my lease under her status which she qualify for a hip coverage as a common law?

Do not think she can apply for OHIP until either she has OWP and have a job that will employ her 6 months or longer. Or if the sponsorship application is at the AIP stage.
You can check with OHIP for details.

My friend had a similar case and his common-law partner did get OHIP under the above-mentioned points!

Thanks for the insight. Chances are my friend's condition might have been slightly different then. But I'm positive she didn't have a job when applying for it but still got OHIP. :/

You need to replace the word `girlfriend' with Common-Law Partner, since she is no longer your girlfriend. ;)

You can apply for OHIP once you get the AIP letter (eligibility is completed). https://www.ontario.ca/page/apply-ohip-and-get-health-card. I am one of the people who is holding OHIP from the AIP letter. However, mine is not common-law (but marriage) but I don't think that would be a problem. Not all ServiceOntario know about it though, you have to go to one of the big ones. If you are in Toronto, I can tell you exactly which one does it, because I went there.

I’m in Toronto. What’s the best location for this process?

You can now qualify once you get AOR for inland spousal sponsorship but may be able to qualify for Outland as well. When IRCC made it easier for spouses to enter Canada before sponsorship approved many did not have health coverage and had not considered they would not have health coverage leading to many issues especially surrounding pregnancy. Assume that lead to the change around 6 months ago.
