Can I enter Canada with immigration visa stamped in an old (punched) passport?

Hi. I have my immigration visa ready. My passport is still valid for one more year. But when it will be expired (in Canada) I will have difficulties with getting a new one, as my consulate is in Ottawa and I will be in Calgary, and I will have to make a long trip for this purpose. Surely I can consider visiting Ottawa as a journey :), but I would prefer going there whenever I wont and not only because of the expired passport. So I was thinking about what to arrange in this case from my native country. I visited the passport office and they suggested obtaining a new passport right now, while the old one will be punched. They say it's a common practice when people are having visas stamped in the punched passport and they still can enter destination countries having a new clear passports and showing punched passports on the port of entry. I didn't check, but I think that the Canadian visa page itself should not be punched in this case.
Just wanted to collect a few advises from people who had the same issue. Does it really work? Don't want to be sent back from the port of entry :)

Hi I have done this, I got a new passport but have my US visa still valid in the old one. They just stamped the old passport in each page with the word 'canceled' but where the visa was. I have crossed between US and Canada multiple times showing both passports, the new valid one and the old one as it has the visa. The visas don't expire because your passport expires.
