Hi. I have my immigration visa ready. My passport is still valid for one more year. But when it will be expired (in Canada) I will have difficulties with getting a new one, as my consulate is in Ottawa and I will be in Calgary, and I will have to make a long trip for this purpose. Surely I can consider visiting Ottawa as a journey , but I would prefer going there whenever I wont and not only because of the expired passport. So I was thinking about what to arrange in this case from my native country. I visited the passport office and they suggested obtaining a new passport right now, while the old one will be punched. They say it's a common practice when people are having visas stamped in the punched passport and they still can enter destination countries having a new clear passports and showing punched passports on the port of entry. I didn't check, but I think that the Canadian visa page itself should not be punched in this case.
Just wanted to collect a few advises from people who had the same issue. Does it really work? Don't want to be sent back from the port of entry
