Apply for a study permit while I'm in the country? Currently I'm missing ONE out of all the requirements for a study permit, and can't really wait because I have various nagging time constraints, so I was wondering if travelling to Canada with a different visa, AND THEN applying for a study permit is an option/will work.

Or is this like, totally wrong?

Thanks for your future answers!

No - you can't. You don't meet any of the conditions for applying for a study permit from within Canada. See:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/study-changes.asp

If you are in Canada as a visitor and wish to apply for a study permit to attend a designated learning institution, you may be able to do so from within Canada. As of June 1, 2014, certain foreign nationals may apply for and receive a study permit from within Canada. These include:

- minor children studying at the primary or secondary level;
- exchange or visiting students; and
- students who have completed a short-term course or program of study that is a condition for acceptance at a designated institution.

Thanks for the info. Just two questions from what you have shown.

You mentioned Minor Students at secondary level... Does this include students who have recently turned 18 and are still in Highschool? or are they immediately exempt from the day they reach that age, even if they're still in HS? asking that one for my friend.

Secondly, what exactly qualifies as a "visitor student" and what makes it different from an exchange student?

Thanks

Minor children studying at the primary or high school level refers to those who are under 18 and applying to attend primary school or high school in Canada. Is your friend planning on attending primary school or high school in Canada?

Visitor student and exchange student are the same thing. This refers to someone who is in Canada as a student on a short term exchange program where the exchange program has been officially arranged by their school outside of Canada with a school in Canada.

My friend is a student in secondary school looking to transfer Grade 12 credits for the September intake. They have already turned 18 though.

Hi,

I have a similar question here, while I don't know why can't I post.....

I'm currently in a master program in Taiwan.

I plan to visit University of Regina in Saskatchewan as a graduate visiting student.

I would like to stay for eight months.

Because I have a contract with my home institution here in Taiwan, I need to arrive at U o R at Aug. 1st.

But far as I know, I need to get the study permit from CIC in order to stay more than six months in Canada. If I wait for the study permit in Taiwan, I think I won't be able to enter Canada before Aug. 1st.

My question is, can I enter Canada with a visitor visa, then apply the study permit inside Canada?

I've read the new rules page, which start from June 1st, 2014. It seems that this way works.

But I'm still not sure if my case adapts to this rule.

And if this works, what documents should I prepare for the customhouse?

Best regards,

Akai

Good to see another in the same situation...
After some research, I find people saying NO, because you apparently need to be at an DLI prior to applying if you want to apply WITHIN Canada.

However I found this... Add this after typing the CIC website.
/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=483&t=15

And it surely seems like it says almost otherwise especially the "in person or by mail" part... Does this mean I could mail my application to Los Angeles while I'm in Canada? And the "home country or another country". Does "another country" include Canada?

Please can any experts clarify the difference between the above link and the initial study permit requirement page.
