Can I delay application of CoPR?

My wife had received the letter asking her to apply for the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (CoPR) within 30 days. And the expiry date of my wife's Permanent Resident document(s) will be 2024/04/18.

However, due to current inflation and housing shortage in Canada. We would like to arrive by March 2025 (one year later), so that we have more time to prepare for children applying schools and finding property to settle.

Could any one give us any advice?

Thank you!

No, she would have to land in Canada before the expiry of the COPR.

But: she can land, do the formalities, and return the next day to wherever you are. Return to Canada a year later is fine.

Only caveat is to be aware of the residency obligation: must reside in Canada 730 days of any five year period (including the first five year period, counted from day of landing). If you actually arrive a year later, and then remain, no problem.

Note: I'm assuming from the context that other members of the family residing abroad are citizens and this is a spousal sponsorship. If not the case, it's a bit or a lot more complicated.

Thank you for your reply.

I'm applying spousal sponsorship for my wife. Our family with two kids are now outside Canada.

I thought the CoPR would expire after a year? That's definitely not the case if this is according to the letter :(

I feel that the application period is so long. And when they approve you, you have to arrive in a short period of time.

The COPR expiry date is attached to the validity of the medical so many do not get a full year to land.

As said above, if you are not ready to move permanently, then have your wife travel to Canada to complete landing formalities before the COPR expires and then move to Canada at a later date. That's really your only option. If you let the COPR expire and your wife does not come to Canada, then you would have to reapply from scratch.

As explained, the COPR's validity for entry is usually linked to the medical.

Note, once 'landed' and the COPR signed, it should be retained as it is proof of having landed (which in some contexts is proof of PR status).

But when your spouse does landing they will formulate the PR card if there is a domestic address to send it to.

I dont think they will allow it or else even one will start doing it .
They did allow it while COVID travel restrictions were in place but that was only for a limited period of time. Otherwise it's "use it or lose it" - meaning that you have to land by the expiration date or start the application process from scratch.
