As above really.

I have had two different jobs over the past two years. Both are within the industry of medical communications/publishing and both have required a university degree in a life science with biomedical modules. I will outline the duties below.

Job 1

Project Coordinator - Medical Publishing
  • Using scientific knowledge and excellent time management skills, undertake the analysis of peer-reviewed medical journals to identify clinically relevant phase-trialed articles and identify relevant reprint sales opportunities, key marketing messages and appropriate target clients.
  • Accurately enter article details into our internal database (SMART) using administrative skills.
  • Produce weekly alerts detailing newly published saleable articles and relevant pharmaceutical news stories to send to our global sales teams.
  • Writing and publishing internal newsletters titled "Hot Topic" - This takes the form of an indication-specific (usually topically relevant in the instance of a new drug approval in the therapy area etc.) lay summary to condense postgraduate level clinical knowledge to better equip our sales teams when having high level conversations with health care professionals.
  • Using our internal databases and business intelligence products, produce custom reports to help inform our sales people (e.g. producing drug pipeline reports).
  • Planning of our company conference calendar - outline the year's most important medical conferences that our company should be attending to generate brand exposure and increase global recognition of our services; whether that be the need to publish an article in one of our journals, to procure reprints or explore one of the many avenues of medical education we offer.
  • Support the maintenance and development of commercial partnerships with other publishers.
  • Develop expertise with SMART & SAPCRM systems to support global colleagues.

Account Executive - Medical Communications

This role will focus on the development and delivery of digital and video solutions for pharmaceutical and biotechnology clients. The successful candidate will be able to hit the ground running and take a lead on a number of existing accounts.
  • to manage the day-to-day activities of allocated projects
  • to develop project plans, timelines and budgets for projects in line with client brief, for approval by the senior team
  • to brief the internal team and medical writers on project aims and advise on allocated budgeto proactively update the client and senior team on the progress of all projects on a regular basis
  • to maintain accurate financial records of all projects
  • to ensure that all projects are invoiced accurately and to maintain contact with the finance department regularly with budget status updates
  • to reconcile projects on a regular basis, and flag potential budget adjustments to the senior team and client
  • to proactively seek solutions to project- and/or client-related concerns
  • Involvement with client calls and f2f meetings
  • Complete and maintain status reports

I have 21 months experience as a Project Coordinator and coming up on 5 months as an Account Exec.

I feel these jobs MAY fall under two NOCs. Without 2 years experience in a class 0, A or B job I don't qualify for express entry. So I wanted to know if I can obtain 2 years experience with 2 different NOCs. One for 21 months and one for 5 months?

Secondly, I also feel that these jobs could both actually fall under NOC code 1221 - Administrative Officer? Can anyone informed give me their opinion on this?
This would obviously be ideal as I would then be pushed over the 67 boundary and gain access to express entry in the event of me being unable to use two different NOCs.

The issue is is that my current work is Account exec, so I would have to wait another 18 months to even just begin my application.

Can anyone advise?

Thanks,

Will

Under the six selection factors you can only claim points for the work experience on your Primary NOC.

To be eligible for FSW, you have to have a minimum of one year of continuous experience in a single NOC. EDIT - but as DelPiero said, you will maximize the FSW points under the selection factors by having more time in a single NOC.

But for your total work experience (CRS points), you can combine any number of skilled NOCs.

If you are talking about Canadian work experience, it would be helpful to specify that. You can combine different jobs/NOCs for the one year minimum requirement.

The issue is is that my current work is Account exec, so I would have to wait another 18 months to even just begin my application.

Not an issue.

I am a British citizen, and any experience gained has been done so in the UK. I understand I only need one year of work experience to qualify. However unless I have two full years I do not have enough points to be eligible for express entry (under 67).

So I guess my main concern now is whether these two jobs can fit under the same NOC?

Do you have any thoughts on whether those two jobs would fall under one NOC, perhaps 1221?
Sorry, those kinds of decisions can make or break your application so I always refrain from giving advice regarding which NOC to choose.

Anyone prepared to comment? Not going to take your word as gospel, I am simply looking for opinions at this point.

Cheers

Well, you should be asking yourself not whether it is possible to shoehorn the two under the same NOC, but which NOC aligns the best with the job duties/responsibilities of each position. Not easy to figure out in this case; for some, getting the NOC right is the biggest challenge.

How much of a gambler are you? You can try it; if it works, great. If it doesn't, you are closer (time wise) to being able to re-apply with 2 years under your current NOC. You would lose your application fee etc, but some people would feel it is worth the risk.

Hi,

Thanks for everyone's help so far.
Personally I feel like it isn't so much a case of trying to "shoehorn" the two under one job code. Medical Communications is an extremely niche industry and in itself, unless you are a medical writer, it is extremely tricky to find an appropriate NOC code that directly corresponds.

In my case I believe some "creative licence" is warranted; I am going to look to shift focus away from my specific responsibilities as they are quite unique and specialised and will be hard to pin down using the NOC system.
Instead I will look to focus on the specific skills I have used for each role and look to tailor my "job duties" to align with the NOC requirement. Both roles essentially contain a great deal of project planning/management along with the administrative duties this involves.

Below is a modified job description of my first role as "Project Coordinator". I am a lot more confident that this ties in with the NOC requirement for 1221. The second role has a lot more budgetary involvement tied in with the project planning/management aspects so I will look to do the same with this at some point today.

In the mean time:

Project Coordinator
  • Using scientific knowledge and excellent time management skills, rapidly scan journal content to identify articles that merit reprint sales opportunities, contain key marketing messages and appropriate target clients.

  • Accurately enter article details into our internal database using administrative skills.

  • Produce weekly reports detailing newly published saleable articles and relevant pharmaceutical news stories to send to our global sales teams

  • For all weekly projects/reports develop a project plan for the week, coordinate with team members and use teamwork/communication to appropriately delegate responsibilities within team

  • Manage several projects/reports a week and use organisation skills to continually establish work priorities

  • Each week several reports/internal newsletters are distributed from the department - oversee and coordinate tasks within team to ensure all weekly project processes and deadlines are met

  • Plan company conference calendar - identify the year’s most important medical conferences which the company should be attending to generate brand exposure and global recognition of our services; publishing articles in our journals, procuring reprints or exploring medical education options.

  • Financial analysis - bi-annual analysis of our journal allocation to ascertain revenue obtained per product -use information gained to alter journal allocation going forward and modify project planning.

    • Principal aim to assess journal scanning allocation and maximise revenue generated in reprints against time spent analysing journal
  • Continual feedback to colleagues and supervisors on modifying and implementing best working/administrative practice

  • Using our internal databases and business intelligence products, produce custom reports to help inform our sales people (e.g. producing drug pipeline reports)

Does anyone have thoughts?

Cheers,

Will
