Broken up with partner who sponsored me

My partner (former) sponsored me, but we have now broken up unfortunately. We were together for over four years, and over two of those years I was a permanent resident. Does this split affect my status as a permanent resident? Should I be notifying CIC or any other organisation in my change of status (common-law to single)?

Thanks

No, to both questions in general. However CRA probably should be updated after a minimum of 90 days after separation. See http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/rc65/README.html

Thank you.

When I renew my PR, or apply for citizenship, will I have to show proof that I am separated? Or will the update with CRA be sufficient.

Thanks again.

The only time the CIC cares about a PR's love life is if they have a Condition 51 on their PR. It doesn't sound like that is the case for you. If it were, as long as you stayed together for 2 years after your landing as a PR, you would be fine.

Thank you for your response. I can't see this Condition 51 on my PR card. Would it be on the form I received when I landed (and where would it be)?

My assumption is that if I don't recognise this Condition 51, then I don't have it.

Another quick question - for future applications with CIC, should I put that I am single or legally separated?

Thanks again.

I put legally separated on mine — my sponsor and I haven't divorced yet.

Were you married or in a common law relationship? I assume married, as you are talking about divorce. I was just in a common law relationship. Never actually married.

Be aware that if your PR application for sponsorship was received by CIC ON, OR AFTER, March 2, 2012, you will not be able to sponsor someone (such as a new spouse or common-Law partner) for ~3 more years (new regulation is 5 years total).

Thanks for the info. I'm not looking to sponsor anyone though.

Married. I would assume your marital status would be "single," since you were never married, and is not currently in a common-law relationship. HOWEVER, I don't know for sure. Maybe someone who knows better will be able to provide you with more information.

You would put single. Legally separated only applies when married.
