hi everyone,

I am a PR and an Indian citizen, I will be marrying someone in India soon and was thinking of the best possible ways to bring my future spouse to Canada.
I was considering the student visa route over the outland spouse PR sponsorship because of the delay in the latter.
Recently however we see COVID category visa being approved for immediate family members.
Based on that, I was thinking of the below after the wedding ceremony

  1. Apply for a visitor visa under the COVID category
  2. Wait for up to 3 months for the visa to be granted.
  3. Bring my spouse to Canada
  4. Apply for inland sponsorship
Is this practical? someone said that if the spouse PR application is not initiated, a TRV application is denied. Please advise.

Edit: if the TRV does not get approved in 3 months, I was thinking of starting the outland spouse PR sponsorship.

It's fine to apply for TRV once you're married. But the chances of refusal are relatively high, and you are vastly optimistic about how quickly the TRV might be approved - think several months, not three weeks.

It is up to you to decide, but most likely is TRV will not be approved or not as quickly as you expect. Apply for TRV. Return to Canada and apply outland for spousal sponsorship. If TRV is approved, your spouse joins you and you wait for the PR to be approved while in Canada.

thanks, i have made the correction. was looking at 3 months and not 3 weeks...but yeah, i was thinking if the TRV does not get approved in 3 months, I can initiate the outland sponsorship process.

You are actually still applying for a normal TRV. For spouses who already have a TRV they are able to travel to Canada during covid. Many people misunderstood that spouses being part of the travel exceptions meant they were guaranteed TRVs.
