Hi All
I recently got the Invitation to Apply for Permanent Residence. We are planning to move to BC in Summer 2018. We got a little dog that we want to take. Anybody here has experience with that? Any inputs, good advice, directions to an instructive homepage or blog, etc. would be warmly welcome! We live in China. Thanks
Lukas

Perhaps you can pm "wyho007" for his recent experience bringing his dog to BC from China?

I would suggest that you also talk to your a local vet (in your country) Your vet should not know, or be able to connect with a state vet possibly. There will be vaccinations and other steps and paper work you have to do. This is time consuming and can take several months to get through. Suggest you start with that and do it as soon as possible.

Good luck

If your pet has all the vaccinations and is in good health, you can get your dog

Not necessary. For example, some airlines does not accept flat face dog breeds on board of their planes as cargo or cabin (due to health risks that flying poses to them).

Hello KlausKarp,

A friend of mine brought her dog from Peru to Canada. I remember that she had to get a vaccination certificate and have it translated into English. Before arriving to Canada, I recommend you to contact a pre-arrival information referral specialist in order to get the most updated an accurate information regarding how to bring your dog and other settlement topics. You can contact them at nextstopcanada.ca

Good luck!

I recommend researching the specific rules for the airline. Like AirCanada's site has a "Air Canada - Travelling with your Pet" section that details all their requirements.

In our case, flyin from Brazil meant that we had to buy tickets over the phone in order to specify that we were bringing our pets.

Also keep in mind that some breeds are not permitted in some provinces, I own a Rottweiler so its giving me headaches..... If its a pitbull or smt please double check it... they are pretty strict about it....

I agree that checking with the airline you intend to fly with is a good idea. Especially since not all airlines will not accept pets in their hold (or cabin). Even if they do however make sure that the hold is heated. It gets pretty cold up there, and in winter in Canada even more so.

Good luck.

Thank you all for your input. What I figured until now that it is indeed not as complicated as I anticipated (I imagined quarantine, electronic chips, bunch of special vaccinations, etc.). I didn't think of airline policies yet, because we're still over a year away from going there. Our dog is an undefinable mixed street-dog *censored word*, probably some unholy foxhound/collie/terrier three-way, her health booklet states under species: "dog":), and we love her.

modified message: oh wow, the forum censored the term for a female dog. how nice ;D

Lol

its good that you dont have a problem with the breed , I know that there are some specific provincial restrictions... for the rest you only have to get the required vaccinations, passport kind of thing etc...

Although this info is not for you I would like to share it with all,

This may help all the dog owners a bit maybe, please make sure that your dog is not on the list of banned dogs, and please check for a more reliable source as well....

I travelled with a dog a golden retriever to Canada Tronto airport as tourist and stayed there for three months last year July 2016. Again this year in June , we are planning to do the PR landing with the same dog....

Please carry the vaccination, Rabies is a must along with the normal annual shots all within 1 year and rabies prior to 30 days of travel. That's it. At the airport at customs as you have live animal , you need pay 40 CAD got the dog
.a. permit to take out of the airport. They will verify the document of vaccination.
Watch out for airline rules and crate requirements etc.... That you can contract the local airline.

Lufthansa and KLM I used as they take care of your pet well....
