I have applied for my PR under CEC and got my file id in Jan 2013. I have my current work permit tied to my company and is valid until Apr 2014. I am working for a client through my company and my company's contract with client is about to end, thus will make me jobless. My client is ready to take me as a full time employee if I have a valid status here, so I was wondering whether I could apply for bridging open work permit in this case, which would allow me to stay in Canada and work. I am aware in order to apply for bridging work permit my current work permit should expire within 4 months but will it be possible to get an exemption in my case? Please advice.

Technically you are not eligible (by the letter of the rules).

In practice, you can give it a try (and hope for the spirit of the rule).

The idea behind BOWP applies to cases like yours too and it's started as a way of helping everyone who is eligible for PR. However to avoid a bulk of applications being submitted all at once CIC decided to go with the 4 month limit. There is no official exemption but there are rumours on this forum of people outside of 4 months who've got one so you might want to try too.

Should I apply BOWP for my spouse along with me or can I apply later after I get mine? She is already on an open work permit dependent to my current closed work permit.

You can apply together. Follow the online guided application. I believe they ask you the particular question and will then tell you how to apply for both of you.

Am expecting status on my BOWP by end of next week. The explanation letter basically says I would like to stay and look out for new job to support my family.

Dear cecnov2012,

Thanks for reply, I have one more question.

To apply for Bridge WP, is initial AOR is sufficient or any other confirmation from CIO?

I am expecting my AOR in couple of weeks under CEC, planning to apply in mid of August for Bridge WP.
Wondering am I eligible or not.

Thanks again

It should be sufficient from what I read in this forum. Some have applied before getting AOR too explaining that they have applied for PR and are awaiting AOR anytime soon. They have requested the officer to check for AOR availability in their file when the officer starts processing their BOWP. Those people have got their BOWP approved because they got their AOR when their application was pickedpicked for processing thou initially they didn't have AOR. But if it's not urgent or emergency for you I would suggest you to wait for AOR before applying.

Thank you so much for detailed explanation, very much appreciated.
I will wait for my AOR as you suggested and then proceed.

I would seek your help again when I start my application for BOWP.

Thanks again and all the best for your BOWP

I have got my BOWP approved yesterday though my current work permit is valid until Apr 2014. Also two of my other friends having more than 4 months validity have got theirs approved. But one other friend's application, whose permit was due to expire end of Dec 2013, was rejected saying he does not qualify for it as his current permit is not due to expire within 4 months. So I believe this depends on the VO as well. Good luck to all who have applied for it.

Did you give any explanation letter?
